thanks- what worked is to give them enough to do at the right level for them- combined with getting to know them on a personal basis so I could determine their quirks... it took about a week and that is all I had with them!

the extra morning class that I did this week was 22 second graders!!! Whew! They were very bright and I had to keep coming up with more stuff for them.
