Dogs who don't learn to avoid snakes,
skunks, etc., are frequently eliminated from the gene pool.

LOL!
This reminds me of the last time I had a roommate (many years ago). She saw a mouse in our apt. and that evening bought a cat as a solution to the problem. Well, I think the term, "scary cat" was coined after this one because she would run under the bed everytime she saw any kind of movement from humans or the mouse. Next thing I knew, not only was the mouse still there but we also had ants from the mess she would leave around her food. So, I guess I am biased and can't help but laugh everytime I hear of anyone's cat chasing after anything because it reminds of the "scared cat."

Nana,

cats are way smarter when it comes to things like that, and I ain't just sayin' that 'cause I'm a 'cat man'!

We don't have any rattlers in our neck of the woods, but we do have skunks. You would never see a cat foolish enough to go for a skunk, but I have seen many a dumb dog being turned into an object of odoriferous revulsion...

I have seen my cat chase a deer and go after a bear.  She also kills garter snakes.
