I can't help but remember a Stella Mars postcard of a cat grinning fiercely in a wedding veil, the caption: No more nights in the alley! http://www.zharmae.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=107 (and yes, Christine Redding is CLRedding is Ciel is me.) Frittata
One of the best memories of New Zealand is the beautiful, artful breakfast frittata. If you've never had one, it is like a cross between a quiche and muffin. It is eggs and breadcrumbs baked around vegetables, and other savory things: bacon, sausage, chunks of cheese... Salmon is good, too. Of course these things can all be simply thrown scrambled together into an oven-proof dish and baked a while. But that isn't how they do it in New Zealand. This morning, I laid some wholegrain bread bits in... Sign in to see full entry.

TAPS poked me...
So here I am with some news and updates... I have had an email from the second Dutch Watch Forum member, the one who found my dad's lunar watch, and will be sending it to me. So, that is still happening... Meanwhile... also fun and exciting: I have been brought into a publishing enterprise, a start-up at this point, so no one gets paid, but the plan is that one day it will be a real job, with paychecks and tax withholdings and all! Cool! I might actually get enough into Social Security to... Sign in to see full entry.

sequel to the Lunar Watch story
When I wrote here, I wrote also via email to several other friends and family. In their responses, you see the character and charm of my offspring: The Eldest, 35 with a family of her own: Awesome! The Youngest, nearing 26 and enjoying his college years: That is so cool! The Middlin' One, 33, training dogs in New Zealand: Cool! I got dibs on it when you die! Ah, kids... Aren't they great!? A Father's Day tribute: Jack Redding, my father-in-law
I never met him, he died years before I came on the scene, and considering I was a bit of an uptight kid, and he was a shameless joker, it may be just as well. In any case, he was by all accounts a fine and fascinating man. He was a journalist and public relations man, and served the nation during World War II as a military press liaison. He was also the military liaison at the Potsdam Conference, at which was made the treaty that ended WWII in Europe. He served as the chief of PR for Harry... Sign in to see full entry.

unexpected and astonishing.
There is a story-- Many years ago, 1970 or thereabouts, my father, Dr Kenneth Franklin, who was an astronomer, played with an idea: that if we meant to colonize the Moon--this was during the Apollo program--we would need to have a different way to determine time there: the clocks and systems of the Earth would be unsuitable for the Moon. So he invented a time system for the Moon. The Helbros watch company took this idea, and made the watch for it. Neiman Marcus, the Texas store that puts out a... Sign in to see full entry.

Did you ever..
write a letter, and send it off sure that it said what you meant, and how you felt, conveyed a certain tone... Then glanced next day at the copy you kept, and realize... There's no way this will be taken as intended... What you thought was light and friendly, thoughtful, casual, interesting... will be received as something much less nice. I fear I have become in someone's eyes not merely spam, but whiny bitchy spam. It's a comedown... once, I was a friend, playfellow, interesting chat; I was... Sign in to see full entry.

Okay, here's one...
Before her business visa came through, Marika did a lot of volunteering and participated with the Wellington Kennel Club. She signed up her own dog for an agility class. Cooper is a Lancashire Heeler... a small but tough little dog with an obvious touch of Corgi, but much smaller, and colored like a black and tan doberman. He has the mind of a big dog, and if he were working according to his heritage, he would be herding cattle. So he is smart and energetic and cooperative at will. His will. At... My daughter and her dogs
She has volunteered at the Wellington SPCA and another up the west coast, I don't recall its name--since she arrived in New Zealand 2 years ago. She trains dogs and people, so that dogs are more adoptable and people, more adaptable to their new companion's needs and nature. Last summer her business visa came through, and she opened her own training business. Visit here here: http://www.dancingdogs.co.nz/ On her rather spiffy website you can learn all about anything I could tell you... Wait, let... Sign in to see full entry.
