Not for soup, no. Hemp twine is waxed, I am not sure why exactly. It makes it harder to use, like starch can make a shirt hard to wear, especially if you can't bend your arms. So, to use it as yarn, I boil the wax out of it. First, the ball has to be unwound into a skein, for which I have devised a piece of cardboard, as the forearm wind makes an unweildy hank that tangles.
