The Deanery Synod

Went to the Deanery Synod last night. England is divided up into quite large geographical areas called Dioceses by the Church of England. Dioceses are further divided up into deaneries which comprise a number of different parishes and/or benefices. Being rural, our deanery has thirty-two parishes... Sign in to see full entry.

Any Old Deeds?

Today is another day, amazingly. I woke to glorious sunshine, bright blue sky and a light breeze, perfect for cycling to St Mary's. Stopped off at Gerald's en route. Gerald is the clerk to the Pennoyer's Trustees (Vicars And Tarts) and has done a huge amount of work towards getting the old school... Sign in to see full entry.

And Then There Was One

Travelled to the Cathedral this morning for a meeting. Actually it was quite a good meeting, as meetings go. It started with a Communion service in the Cathedral and finished with lunch. Well, a sandwich, anyway. And we learned about everything that the Cathedral is doing. It's a lot! But when I got... Sign in to see full entry.

An Old Friend

Had a very long day yesterday with two services in the morning (one of them a Harvest Festival), a baptism in the afternoon (with lots of noisy children - nice, but difficult to handle), then a choir practice prior to a Harvest Evensong. We went directly from the Harvest Evensong (which, thank the... Sign in to see full entry.

Harvest Supper

Got inveigled into attending last night's Harvest Supper. Yes, I know they're good affairs and lots of fun and all that, but you only have to attend one. I have six! (Remind you of the Vicar of Dibley's Christmas dinners? You thought it was just a joke, doesn't really happen?) To be honest, I... Sign in to see full entry.

Death Of A Vicar Or Two

Saw it in yesterday's paper. Two of my friends have died, on succeeding days. And their funerals are on succeeding days, Friday and Saturday next week. They're both Vicars in this diocese and I'm the only one in the diocese to have worked with both of them. Guess that makes me some kind of common... Sign in to see full entry.

On The Roof

Walked to the church in the next village yesterday to meet the architect and a representative from English Heritage. We've had constant problems with the roof leaking every time it rains and although we've had part of the roof repaired at vast expense, we really need to get on with the next part.... Storms And Turbulence

Cycled down to St Mary's for the monthly meditation class. Why is that when you're on a bike, the wind is ferocious whichever direction you're cycling? Never seems to be at your back, helping you along. Oh well. Struggled along and got there eventually, anxiously eyeing the big black cloud hovering... Sign in to see full entry.

Vicars And Tarts

Walked to the next village this morning for Morning Prayer and stopped outside Pennoyer's School to pass the time of day with a couple of men who were perusing the notice board. Pennoyer's School, so called because it was set up in the seventeenth century by a local businessman, William Pennoyer... Sign in to see full entry.

Harvest For The School

It was the local Primary School's Harvest Festival service today. It's a Church of England school, so we try to keep the links between school and church as strong as possible, hence we encourage the school to hold feast days and festivals in church. And parents are invited too. But in case you... Sign in to see full entry.
