Stood In

Stood in for the Rural Dean today, which was infinitely better than being stood up by him. He's on holiday for a week, so asked me to attend the Rural Deans' meeting in his place. It's a good meeting in that it starts with coffee and ends with lunch. I can hack meetings like that. It's relatively... Sign in to see full entry.

A Tricky Funeral

Just back from a rather tricky funeral. James had died after a number of years suffering from Alzheimer's, the last three of which were in a home. I visited the widow and the two sons (from his previous marriage. Ironically, today is the anniversary of his first wife's death in 1985) last week. We... Sign in to see full entry.

Floating

Drove down the back road (as usual) to last night's PCC. Big mistake. Hadn't really noticed that it had been raining steadily all day, as I hadn't been out in it. It wasn't the torrential sort of rain that makes you notice. Of course, I should have realised when I drove through the first minor flood... Sign in to see full entry.

Remembrance Sunday

Had a packed church today for the annual Remembrance Sunday parade. People I've never seen before emerged from the woodwork wearing their poppies with pride and we had a big march from the Village Centre (i.e. the Sports and Social Club, where you get a decent pint for a reasonable price) up to the... Disappointment

I have to report that 'Slava's Snow Show' was something of a disappointment, at least to me. Perhaps if I'd read the blurb before booking... It wasn't a bit as I'd expected. There I was, looking forward to bright lights and sparkly things and fairytale castles and magic in the air, when what we got... Sign in to see full entry.

A Great Day

And no, I'm not referring to the American election, although by the scenes on my television that certainly was a great day. No. I'm talking about our day out with Chris and Jill in Cambridge. We managed to meet up OK, which was something of a miracle in itself since I didn't realise Marks and... Sign in to see full entry.

Cambridge - Here We Come!

Had a PCC last night and one the previous night. Two down and one to go (on Monday night) in this little stretch of PCCs. Of course, for everyone else they're quite a social occasion. They all meet together, have a drink, a chat and lots of laughter and badinage as well as doing the business of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Clergy Playtime

Have you ever seen clergy at play? Quite a sight to behold. We had a Chapter meeting this morning at which one of the brethren entertained us with puppets. These are big, modern puppets about the size (although only down to the waist, no legs or anything) of a two year old child, so can be dressed... Sign in to see full entry.

Got Through Barbara's Funeral

Well, I got through Barbara's funeral and it went well, so perhaps I'll sleep better tonight. Masses of people there, all feeling very sad. Her kids were terrific. Her eldest daughter, who is only thirty three and had been caring for Barbara in her final illness, gave a talk about her mother. I was... Sign in to see full entry.

The Return Of Nigel The Curate

Rejoice with me - Nigel the Curate has returned! Without Elvis, sadly, but otherwise intact. He received my text in Corfu and replied to it from Paphos in Cyprus but I didn't get it. Probably because I didn't have my mobile phone switched on. Well, you can't, can you, when you're watching 'The... Sign in to see full entry.
