I am enjoying the rare feeling of mellow contentment, here at Sage Haven.

I hesitate to put these thoughts before you, because it seems that whenever I take stock of how things are going in my life and they AREN’T pretty awful, some evil entity corrects the situation, very quickly. My spirits are usually comparatively high at this time of year, just because most of the nice weather still lies ahead of us. I love to see my garden burgeoning but I resist comparing mine with others. I usually come out second best, when I compare. One day recently, I saw a frightened... Sign in to see full entry.

Does anybody really know what time it is? Check the "Doomsday clock!"

Seeing the behavior of our children and the effects of it on THEIR children makes me wonder when our national train of parenthood, left the tracks. Children of the “Baby Boom” years were raised, for the most part, by devoted, two parent, single income families, dedicated to raising families infused with a good work ethic, a conscience, goals, vision, and values. Compared to the lives of our parents, we Boomers hit the ground running, having never experienced the privation and struggle of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Barbequeing this summer? Skip the charcoal briquettes, trust me!

Because today, at 10:00AM, the temperature here was nearly 80 degrees, and 80% humidity, when Marilyn asked me to prepare hamburgers for supper, I resolved to grill them outdoors. Having used up the last of our charcoal briquettes last evening, barbequing baby-back ribs and being heavily under-motivated to make another trip to the store, I started a fire using good old-fashioned hard maple firewood. Our burgers were MARVELOUS! Cooking over a gas flame cooks food only with heat, just as electric... Sign in to see full entry.

I just learned of the death of Tim Russert. NBC, and news junkies throughout the world have lost one of the all-time, “ GREAT ” journalists. Russert will be remembered as deserving to be included in a very small elite group. He was another Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and I cannot think of another broadcast journalist’s name to add. He also wrote two best-selling books. Thousands of people cherished his friendship. Millions will mourn him. Many of his peers were as beloved by vast... Sign in to see full entry.

And here's to you, Mrs. Bluenose! Jesus hates you, too!

I recently had a strange, unsettling experience. Someone made it necessary for me to examine the motives behind the actions of another person. This is difficult enough to do for oneself. Much of what we all do in the conduct of, or our actions, or our reactions over what occurs in our life, is unconscious. I think that this is due to some twisted form of self-interest, involving the real or imagined threat of the loss of something, early experience, adult experience, best-case scenarios,... The sun will come up tomorrow! Thanks Annie, but it is still raining here.

Things may be looking up today, or at least my situation may possibly be a bit less dark. Marilyn’s, thankfully sole offspring, walks among us, a temporarily free thug once more. His bail was raised without our financial assistance and ruin. His girlfriend, AKA “ the victim, crazy slut, crack whore," and many other less flattering appellations, spent her government stimulus/bribe check and “ borrowed ” the rest from her apparently senile step-grandmother. Good luck at ever seeing that money... Sign in to see full entry.

A very, very, very BAD day in the life of a very despondent sage! SOB!

As the old saying goes, “ Don’t count your chickens!” I should have known better! When my prospective renters did not call me to confirm that they were serious about renting my house yesterday, by meeting me, as we had arranged to, in order to fill out the inventory/condition part of the rental agreement, I just knew deep down, that something was wrong. Today, I was torn between canceling my rental ad, and letting it run for at least one more week. When I had not heard from them before 2: 00 PM,... Sign in to see full entry.

My newest nightmare is over, after only four days! A new record!

I found my new renters for my house, after only four days of misery, answering the phone, showing it, mowing it, answering questions, discovering new damages, sizing up prospective renters, etc. This is a new record for me. It usually takes a minimum of weeks, to several months, before someone convinces me that they will appreciate it, will maintain it, pay the rent, pay the rent ON TIME, not burn it down, not make me evict them, and not move out, leaving it unoccupied and unheated, during the... Billy May and Jerry Garcia. A long strange trip indded.

I just saw Billy May selling INSURANCE! All I could think of saying was, OH MY DAD! Billy May is now selling some kind of INSURANCE! Does this mean that there will not be any shipping and handling charges for this, his latest scam? Forty-some cents will mail me a form that insures my health and/or life? Even less, if Billy qualifies for a bulk rate! How can ol’ Billy make as much money as he has always made, selling his other crap, hawking insurance? If Billy cannot charge $8.00 to package and... I understand that someone paid $4,100.00 for a rare black watermelon, in Japan. I assume that it is being bought for the seeds. This could be valuable as a novelty type watermelon and could be a big hit with shoppers. I also understand that a soup company offered a lot of money once, for a coreless carrot. The cores of carrots are bitter, compared to the rest of the carrot, and when the coreless carrot was cloned it was a valuable advance for canned soup. I would be willing to bet that McCain’s...
