STREET SEEN

I thought briefly about contacting the editor of our local paper - the Intelligencer - about writing a weekly sights & sounds feature to be called "Street Seen." The idea was to feature local merchants, chat up the displays in their shop windows, talk about sales or the Saturday morning farmers'... Sign in to see full entry.

nothin' much

Some meme I saw somewhere was a question about whether the reader grew up with a mom who cooked meals from scratch instead of ordering out or nuking a dish from the freezer. It so happens my mom baked her own bread. We had a vegetable garden, grew enough green beans, tomatoes and other things to can... Sign in to see full entry.

'TIS THE SEASON

Santa Claus was spotted leaving the local Walmart this morning, carrying a small bag of goodies as he climbed into an old red pickup truck. Apparently, some of his elves have summer jobs at that store. Sign in to see full entry.

ODE TO "NEWS" NETWORKS.

Saturday mornings are for cartoons, for bike rides and playing catch, for hanging laundry on the line to catch the breeze and sunshine: not for news channel follow-up on the latest political blunder or endless rolling pointless unfounded thunder. Sign in to see full entry.

CATCHING UP ON A THREAD FROM SEVERAL DAYS AGO:

"He Wanted Killin' " Ada was seventy-five if she was a day, and sharp as a tack. Things bein’ what they were, she made it a point to carry protection any time she went out to the grocery store for necessaries, or to the Goodwill to check for decent clothes at a fair price. She always wore Granny... Sign in to see full entry.

MICHAEL'S IS FOR CRAFTY PEOPLE

Yesterday, early - before it got up to 93 and intolerable - I headed to Michael's Crafts. I'd run out of white yarn. WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

We search for patterns, for connections, for meaning, a reason. But there is none. Random chance rules the day and the universe. There is no plan, no system to beat, no infinite power guiding our circumstance. There is no interested puppet master. Painful "lessons" happen because we exist: they're... "GOD BLESS AMERICA"

That's the earworm for today. Although the background music for promos on the news shows seems to be the Washington Post March or some other well-known band music. The promos feature fabulous fireworks displays from years gone by. It's a refreshing change to see news readers and weather gurus... Sign in to see full entry.

SOME POWER IS BACK ON

Heard from daughter Lorrie that Ameren (the power co) has restored power in her neighborhood of Decatur as of 6:30 this p.m. Thank heavens. Also heard from son Rich who lives on the other side of town here, the crew has replaced the pole and restored power they'd shut down earlier today while the... Sign in to see full entry.

UPDATE ON OUTAGES

Weather - wind damage. Daughter Lorrie says the power company expects to have power restored by this evening. Meanwhile they have a generator to operate the CPAP machine for her partner Mike and run the fans. She says it hasn't been too hot overnight & they got some sleep. In the Greater St. Louis...
