I was still a kid when the movie came out: "The Great Dan Patch." Dan Patch was a world-famous trotting horse, winner of the Hambletonian in Illinois, a trotting- horse competition which wasn't quite the equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. Until then (1949) I'd thought of racehorses as having riders,... Sign in to see full entry.

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE... BUT THE WHEELS TURN SOOO SLOW
In case you're sick of stories about Trump - aka "the Donald" - in all iterations, this is an advisory: today's post may make you sick to your stomach. Take two '70s rock music tunes, listen to the lyrics, and as the Fonz used to say, "Fogedaboudit!" With the conviction of four "Proud Boy"... Sign in to see full entry.

HOME & GARDEN
The truck backed up the neighbor's driveway and stopped a good ten feet in front of their garage. A canvas sheet had been spread in just that spot. The driver pulled a lever, the front of the truck bed raised, and voila! A load of rich brown compost piled up nearly four feet high, a mini-mountain of... Sign in to see full entry.

PUPPETS, CLOWNS AND TRICKSTERS, OH MY!
You want to find a clown? Look in any political venue, such as the governor's office, the House of Representatives, the Senate. Banning books and making new laws to control human biology are two of the most recent, most futile side shows I can recall. You may have zero interest in politics. Perhaps... A CONTEMPORARY WRITER/POET - SHERMAN ALEXIE
Looking for an idea on my bookshelf of writer bios and how-to techniques, a dictionary of cliches and two or three others - I came across a book of poetry by Sherman Alexie "The Summer of Black Widows." Alexie was a big star in Seattle in the '90s, often seen with his entourage along the scenic... Sign in to see full entry.

DOOR IS FIXED...
CCT - you were right. A few toothpicks, a bit of Elmer's glue and it's fixed. Then he noticed the door handle/latch wasn't working right, went out to the hardware store and bought a replacement one. It's all upgraded and working well now. Nice to have sons (both of them came over for lunch and home... Sign in to see full entry.
UPPERS AND DOWNERS
Son Rich came over for a short visit yesterday afternoon. He brought along an art project made by my grandson Matt for his sculpture project at school. It was a "self-portrait" bust, made out of recycled cardboard packing boxes. It is larger than life, about the size of a basketball. He's painted it... Sign in to see full entry.

KEEPING SECRETS
I've been thinking about secrets this morning. Not state secrets or security leaks, although that's been front and center on some media programming lately. Nope, I've been thinking of secrets some of us keep thinking to protect someone else from dark knowledge. Let's say someone harmed a child and... Sign in to see full entry.

Non Sequitur
After reading a quote by Marjorie Taylor Greene online this a.m., in which she said nobody raised taxes to melt glaciers during the ice age, I began to wonder what the heck that has to do with any issue before Congress this term. It seemed to be a total non sequitur - total nonsense. Then I began to... Sign in to see full entry.

PARTING WORDS
When my bags were packed and in the trunk of my car, just before I left the house on Logan Street where I'd endured mistreatment, disrespect and physical abuse, I turned to face my soon-to-be ex, and here's what I told him: "If you don't tell any lies about me, I won't tell the truth about you." -*- Sign in to see full entry.
