Thursday...

The front steps are set in place. Freaky me, I'm scared of them. I'm so spoiled by having a handrail, and since they had to take the old one out to lay a concrete base under the step unit, and the old assembly was busted up, I'm without a handrail. Funny how dependent we get on such little things.... Sign in to see full entry.

Cantankerous obstructionist or just can't face reality?

Well, if that don’t beat all! Sometimes people do things that just leave you scratching your head. The lady next door came home a couple weeks ago after being gone for a couple months. I had a hunch she was in the hospital when I saw relatives driving her mini-van to pick up the old man, who doesn't... Sign in to see full entry.

Mixed emotions...

My daughter's coming in a few days to help finish up the bathroom remodel. I'm a hundred percent thrilled with having her here - she's got a decorator's touch. She wants to do the tile work around the new shower. But I wish she would just stay home. She's a third-year law student and the first part... Sign in to see full entry.

"Glamour" shots

I'm kinda sorta logical in a roundabout way. Cause and effect is a thing that is still sinking in at times, but I've learned a lot from watching crime procedural shows like "Law & Order." Here's the latest example: I need to clear my arts and crafts and games out of the basement because my son is... Sign in to see full entry.

"Progress" has snuck up on Mundane...

There's a page on FB - "I grew up in Mundane and I remember..." People who stayed here or people who went off somewhere to make their fortunes ask about the good old days. Some post pictures of the grain elevator that used to sit on one corner, or the corner store near their grade school where they... Sign in to see full entry.

Shut the front door!

Well, the concrete guys showed up yesterday - I wasn't expecting to see them until next week. I was getting ready to head for Lowe's to pick up some concrete cleaner and a push broom to clean the grubby concrete pad in front of the garage. As I went down the front steps I found Josh and Jason were... The check's in the mail, but we're closing the Post Office.

Yesterday I saw two retired professors chatting in the supermarket, talking about the Governor of Illinois and how he stopped the paychecks of state legislators that were due out yesterday. He won't let them have a paycheck until they do something about the state employees' pension crisis, a... Sign in to see full entry.

Ch-ch-ch-changes... Isn't there a song that starts like that?

About a week ago (Blogit Day 7-22) there came a long-anticipated renovation of son Joe's battered old asphalt driveway. He had them break out and pour a new garage floor, the approach to the front door, and to pour a concrete pad out back so there'd be a place to barbecue. The crew arrived when they... The Difference Between Prejudice and Racism

The word "racism" has been sprinkled throughout the headlines and news items for the past few weeks. People, and by people I mean the famous - actors, stand-up comics and talk-show pundits - keep tripping over what they refer to as the "N-Word." They posit about whether it's okay for any group to... Sign in to see full entry.

About yesterday's poem...

When I first read my son's post, I just knew there was a secret message hidden in the poem: a code of some kind. The whole thing was like an ode to joy, a celebration of a beautiful walk at sunset. Turns out I was right, the words "I Love You" are there. A couple months ago I noticed a change in... Sign in to see full entry.
