We very seldom went to the city when I was a little girl. If we did go Mother would hang camphor bags, that she had made herself, around sis and my necks....to ward off Polio. I remember getting the Salk vaccine in early school.

Pat we never dared mention feeling sick or out came the ipecacuanha bottle how I dreaded that dose.A woman told me at the beginning of Winter her mother rubbed chests and backs of the children with goose fat put on their vests and they were not taken of until Spring. Not so good if the fat had been cooked with onions smell-wise.
