It's Monday. I've been looking for just a bit of good news on the morning TV shows. So far, no luck. Networks and local news channels have plenty of film clips and narrative about folks waving Nazi flags, wars, strikes, politics. Makes for a grim picture. Their presentation slants toward the awful.... Sign in to see full entry.

OLD NEWS
The Journal organization published four weekly newspapers in Madison County back in the '80s: The Wood River Journal, The Bethalto American, and two others whose names slip my mind. The Journal publications were tossed into yards by newsboys on bikes, and readers looked for feature stories about... Sign in to see full entry.

HALLOWEEN IN THE OLDEN DAYS
Reminders on TV, in the stores, etc., that Halloween is nearly here. It was the best holiday when I was a kid living in a small village. All the kids went to every house and came home at the end of our trick or treating with a shopping bag full of candy. Enough to last until Christmas even sharing... Sign in to see full entry.

DEWEY WINS!
That was the newspaper headline! The race was between Harry S. Truman and Thomas E. Dewey. Truman had been vice president for Franklin D. Roosevelt and took over the presidency after Roosevelt passed away from complications of polio (as I remember it). President Roosevelt had been our leader as we... Sign in to see full entry.

Old Favorite
This week, with all the hell that's hit the southwest, especially North Carolina where my daughter lives, I've been focused on the news 24-7. Weather Channel updates look like news pictures from devastated war zones in Ukraine, Israel or Lebanon. There are many interviews and live coverage of... Sign in to see full entry.

We're about to embark on a ten-day stretch of dry, perfect fall weather. Not a drop of rain in the forecast. High today and tomorrow in the low-mid seventies, warming up to the low 80s very soon. Seems like an absolute total contrast to the sh*t that is working against humanity in the southeast.... Sign in to see full entry.

THE TOAST
After Jeb's funeral, Mary Lee and her friends gathered at the Corner Tavern to drink a toast and reminisce. Doris asked a question. "Mary Lee, why in the world did you insist we attend the burial, too? We could have been here celebrating instead of standing out there in the cold and rain." "Oh, you... Sign in to see full entry.

UPDATE ON THE HELLISH HURRICANE SITUATION
My daughter's car has an internet connection feature, so she was able to plug in her phone and call me this morning from her mountain cabin in NC. Roads are impassible, trees and power lines are down, some roads and bridges are washouts, but she said they have ice to keep food cold, a gas-burning... Sign in to see full entry.

WEATHER
Just looked at the Zany Wayne story from two days ago & realized I didn't post yesterday. I'd like to tell you it was because I was partying on the porch with a bunch of escapees from the art fair at City Park this weekend. But it was nothing such fun. It was a day for watching the Weather Channel... Sign in to see full entry.

ZANY WAYNE – THE LAST CHAPTER
The Wayfarer’s Coffee Shop did a good business in Morton village. Lunchtime on Saturday was their most profitable. Weekday coffee klatches were mostly break-even on account of their free-refills policy, but it was worth it to keep the ladies and their hubbies coming back for the Friday fish fries...
