ABOUT THE REAL SQUIRRELS

There are four squirrels in this neighborhood, two of whom live in my yard or just across the street. These two are Itchy and White Ears. I usually put out the peanuts for them just after "Days of Our Lives" signs off at 3:00. When they show up to eat and hide away the extras depends on what's going... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

White Ears scampered across the driveway and lawn to climb the trunk of a budding cherry tree in the next door neighbor’s yard. She’d decided against nesting there long ago. But that was before Acme destroyed her home. The human there was always grooming the yard, raking up leaves and edible items.... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

The other crew repeated the process on the second maple where White Ears had her nest. The ground crew picked up branches that fell to the ground and carried them to the grinder behind the box truck. As each branch was stuffed into the grinder, the noise was deafening. Wood chips and sawdust blew... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

A human passing by the house at #10 Brick Street observed Tomcat on a branch of the maple tree, yowling pitifully. The branch was too high for him to reach up and get the cat, so he pulled out a cell phone and called the fire department. Soon the Brick Street troop’s domain was full of first... DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

After he woke up from his morning nap, Paladin wandered out into the back yard, sniffing for something to eat. He stopped, took a quick look around; no cat prowling the yard, no hawk circling above, but no food, either. He scurried around to the front of the house, hoping to find a peanut or two at... DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

Once his meal was finished, Paladin moved up one of the maple trees and found his way along the branches and rooflines to the back yard. Sure enough, groundhog’s old burrow was still there. That would do until he could stake out a safe tree. But as he approached the entrance he caught the scent of... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

White Ears jeered at Paladin from her tree, told him to go on back to wherever he’d been all this time. He wasn’t welcome here, and she had half a mind to kick his behind herself. He looked up at her for a long moment. Then he deliberately turned his back. This version of Brick Street was beginning... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

As White Ears rounded the corner of the house on her way to shop for a peanut at the maple tree, she was greeted by an all-too-familiar voice. Paladin! She stopped in her tracks and looked at him, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. You've got your brass- coated nerve, showing yourself in this... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

Recently the troop had begun to find peanuts scattered near the foot of White Ears’ nest maple from time to time. Trubbles had cleaned up the last of them. He sat on his haunches deciding what next when he felt a sudden strange vibration. He leapt up the tree and got to a safe limb before whatever... Sign in to see full entry.

DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

Mellie joined her wayward pup in the nest, scolding severely. Cece hung her head respectfully as her mother lectured, but a minute later she peeked out to look for the acorn. It was right where she’d dropped it. She started to go after it. Mellie yanked her roughly into the safety of the nest and... Sign in to see full entry.
