Comfort Food

It's funny how food has such a powerful effect on the human psyche. It was 1996; and I was in Laie, Hawaii. My being there was nothing short of a miracle. I was a young mother, with three small children. We had just finished remodelling a small home on an acreage, and we didn't have a lot of money.... Sign in to see full entry.

What's the Magic Word?

I love to swear. Swearing and I go way back....it's been like...another sibling to me, if you will. My first experience with profanity was at my friend Evette's house. Her mother was a struggling single mom, living in the projects. I went there to stay overnight, amazed that I'd gotten permission to... Sign in to see full entry.

The Clothes Make the Man

I don't know what I was thinking when I told my mother I wanted to be in Band. Well....actually, yes I do... I was beginning to be friends with Suzanne McKnight, one of the popular girls, and I wanted that friendship to continue; if only for my own selfish purposes...I was in fifth grade, we were... Happy Un-Birthday to You

When the clock struck midnight, we all went a little crazy. It was my birthday, and I was another year older....one step closer to adulthood, and to the highly anticipated moving-out-of-the-house event. My best friends and I had just been to a seriously rowdy concert and we were all wound up,... Bless the Cook

I've been told that you can say just about anything about anyone, if you add the phrase 'bless their heart' afterwards. My mother is a bad cook, bless her heart. She wasn't extremely young when she married, but fairly naiive and somewhat inexperienced in a hundred different ways, including cooking.... Sign in to see full entry.

The Washcloth Incident

Don't think I wasn't somewhat proud of myself for producing two sons within the first five years of my marriage; I was. Sons for a husband's family that had produced mainly daughters...ExMan was the youngest of five, the only son (a double whammy for getting spoiled, I assure you). He was the only... What's In a Name?

I lived in Pennsylvania until I was eleven, almost twelve. The area that we lived in there was a melting pot of the Polish, Irish, Scottish, German, you name it, they were all there. I went to school with Yablonskis, Stankiewicz's and my fifth grade teacher's name was Mrs. Jurkiewicz. I had never... Sign in to see full entry.

Toilet Paper and Tornadoes

It was the coolest thing, ever. I took the toilet paper, layered it into the sink, turned on the water, and it disintegrated like cotton candy meeting moisture. Amazing. Most things like this were amazing when I was seven years old. Just to make sure; I needed to try it again. And again...and, yeah,... Sign in to see full entry.

The Daily Sermon

It is truly a wonder that I'm religious at all. Family prayer-time at our home was full of pomp and circumstance. Our father was the 'pomp' and when we didn't behave during the prayer, we got the 'circumstance'. The man could pray for an eternity. By the time I got to be a teenager, the way I saw... Jail Break

Mom always thought it was good for us to switch out roommates at the house every so often. Having four sisters, there was never a shortage for the rotation. At one time, back in Pennsylvania, four of us shared a big attic room...the baby was downstairs with the parental units. That was interesting... Sign in to see full entry.
