You are a lot of fun, you know that??? My mother is German, so I am relating. Would that I had had a nice German last name...yeah, that would've been nice. Mine now is as boring as boring gets. So funny that I would wind up with a very common first name, matched with a very common last name. Similar to Ann Brown. There are a bazillion of us. And once I was so...unique. Never would've thought I would've missed it somewhat. Life's pretty weird...

lovely piece, really nicely written.  I sympathise with you.  I grew up with a Portuguese surname in an English speaking ex-British colony where everyone had either an English or an African name, fewer European names overall.  Always had problems with spelling pronunciation, everything... Now I'm married to a German and have a very uncommon German surname that everyone has trouble with too.  Funny how life goes ... things would be so much easier if my current surname was Schmidt ... ha ha! Smith was my grandmother's maiden name.  Funny.  Thanks Darson, del

Extremely considerate of you, and thanks very much! I would totally tell you if I weren't determined to protect the rest of the family. While I don't mind wearing my heart out on my sleeve (I mean, really, what are we saving it all up for...Christmas???) the rest of my family may want to have options. You are a dear, as well. I like the whole dear Darson thing...maybe I could start a column, like 'Dear Abby'...do you know her? (She died, but she was an icon as far as an advice columnist)....or was it her sister that died...sheesh, I dunno! Thank you abanerjee!

Oh, I just realized I shouldn't have, and I want you to know that it is perfectly all right, dear Darson.

I am blessed now, because my blogit friend Justi just sent a blessing my way, which I appreciate very much. Thank you for your kind comment and have a wonderful morning. I would put an emoticom here, but the computer is so darn slow this morning...so if I could, I would post a beautiful rose for you. If I could choose a color, it would be purple...because I like purple! Hope you do, too!

It's ALL in the attitude!!! And I knew that you weren't a woman (the barbershop comments) so you're okay...! Thank you, Nautikos!

I get the feeling, Taps, that you would be dear and unique no matter what your last name was! You're just that kind of gal!

First of all, I love the way you tell your stories. And, no less importantly, I love your attitude! You're a woman after my own heart (and no, I ain't a woman, in case that should not be entirely clear...LOL)...

What a great post.  I loved it.  Mine has been Stone for more than 50 years and before that was Sanders (Like the Colonel of KFC).  Both of them are very, very, very common names.  You would have trouble finding me hiding in the midst of either.

Thanks for that!
I was picked on for other reasons, but we who are picked on have a strong sense of justice I think.

Funny last name or not, I think a lot of us can relate to being picked on. It always blew my mind how many mean kids there are out there. What I wish I'd known sooner; they are much more cowardly than we are. It's just a matter of slapping them down...sometimes literally! Everybody's got their limits...foolish are those that unknowingly try to test that....they sometimes are taken by surprise. Every now and then, life is fair.

Thank you....I have a feeling there's a story in your blogit nickname? Is there?

posted by Darson on November 1, 2009 at 3:30 PM | link to this | reply

My last name never lent itself to being teasing material. Nonetheless I was picked on at times and hated it.

OH I JUST LOVE THE CHRISTMAS STORY!!! I've been hooked since the first time I watched it!!! "You'll shoot yer eye out!" Ha ha ha ha ha!

I'm really glad you liked the post, Elyse. You're a good writer, so I value your comments quite a lot. Have a lovely Sunday.

Thank you. Regarding making friends out of some of those kids...I would have to say friendly would be a strong word, but they cut a wide swath around me, and I wasn't really afraid of them anymore. Some casual, cordial acquaintances formed, but nothing worth mentioning. The friends that I did have didn't seem to care what my last name was, good souls that they were. I'm still in touch with some of them. Oh, and the teachers....? Children in large bodies, I'd say. Now that I'm an adult, I would never join in the mockery of a child, just to impress my 'peers'...and if a person's a teacher and the students are your peers, they've got more problems than just calling kids names....!

I'm sorry; none of the names on the blog are the real ones...close, but not the actual names...I wanted to keep it a bit private, since the parties involved are still living, be it guilty or innocent! I've completely omitted the old last name, because there are few that top it....other than perhaps, the Schitt brothers and their plumbing business that were on a nother blog...seems like it was either sam444 or Taps's... Hope you don't mind...

I changed my name again when I got married the second time around; that was difficult for me to do, since my three childrens' last name was still my former married name. I had the desire to share that with them. Now I sign it Darson Oldlastname+Newlastname...didn't want to hyphenate, since a 'minus' seems to connote a subtraction, when really, there was an addition. I read that once in a magazine, and it made sense to me.

Oh Darson, no one can tell an account as well as you...You had me enthralled and embroiled by your descriptive memory.  Good for you, and bittersweet that you had to learn to take up for yourself during your younger youthful years...but I think it was one of the character building moments.  I applaud you and I give you bouquets of Praise.  (and next time I need someone could you come tend...) LOL, I'm just teasing... This reminds me however, of that Christmas Story scene where Ralphie has had enough and waylays that bully... (have you seen that movie?) ~  Great read and from a fantastic writer ~  ~ Elyse

Your teachers should have been thoroughly ashamed of themselves putting you through such mental torture! Even though your classmates stopped bullying you, I wonder whether you could ever make friends with them? Excellent post! Thank you for sharing this.
