Yesterday was mostly about helping out some friends who are finally to the point of opening their new business: Drekar Meadery. They have leaped the hurdles and slid through most of the hoops, and yesterday invited everyone to their 'soft opening' which is what revs up to Jan 3rd's Grand Opening. We went early to help with final preparations, doing some painting and cleaning up the bathroom for public use. (Imagine a guys' dorm room bathroom... Not something they generally think of at all.... Yule tide sweeps in...!
Suddenly, another thing I felt was a ways away is suddenly less than a week off! Yes, Christmas! Yesterday I accomplished a Christmas Miracle: all the things burying the dining room table for the past week got wrapped and boxed, and the box even sent off to Washington State, to, they promise, arrive on Tuesday. Never before have I got presents in the mail to be present on Christmas Day! There's more to be done, but this is such a feeling of relief and accomplishment! Charlie has begun the... Traditions and memories
Sun has just come over the rim of the world and town... shines across the house to light the heavy curtain over the front window which helps keep the single-digit cold outside! I am glad to consider that in a week's time, nights will be shorter if not warmer--the 5F outside has frozen the bathroom's cold water pipe again, though it will thaw by this afternoon when temps get above freezing. The Old Farmers promised us extra snowstorms this winter, and so far, they are on the button. But it's okay... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday snow
And here it is, snowing again, and the little birds are digging out the seeds on the back porch rail from under the white stuff. I am also having a snack of ham heated with chunky applesauce, no snow involved. I knew the snow was coming, it was forecast last night to begin around lunchtime, a winter storm advisory, and last until Monday. It was inspiring, really... Inspired me to get out early and do some fill-in shopping. It started with eggs, sandwich meats and bread, and turned into a cart... Sign in to see full entry.

Does this work?
I am still learning to navigate WordPress, where my public bloggery takes place. I just found a new link for sharing new posts and I am wondering if it works for non-members of WP. If you'd give it a try and let me know if it takes you to the actual post, I would greatly appreciate it! https://looselyspeaking.blog/2019/12/14/tolkien-tribute-the-rangers/ Sign in to see full entry.

Into the mountains...
My sister in Estes Park has sold her house, and for the past several months has been preparing to move to a smaller place, an apartment in a senior community in Boulder. She has had some real emotional crises along the way, fighting depression and the particular weariness of the boxing and disposing of things of a lifetime. She lost her husband to prostate cancer years ago, saw our parents to their ends, and now she and I are the ones left. So it is a pleasure to drive up to the mountains and... Sunday in the house with Embers
Here it is, another quiet Sunday morning... Embers is settling down on my chest, but I can see most of the keys on my laptop which occupies my lap which occupies, with the rest of me, the comfy chair. A clock is ticking as it does, and across the room, the 'fire'place is running the little fan that blows warmth into the room. The fish tank with its remaining 3 large comet goldfish makes gentle babbling brook sounds. Charlie has been in Seattle getting to know his dad's new roommate, a big black... another goodbye...
I heard a sound night before last, but was busy and distracted and didn't go check it out. It was my oldest, biggest, loveliest goldfish, the white one with the long tail, leaping out of the tank and hitting the floor. I found her there in the morning. Now she has gone wherever small creature's spirits go, and her body has gone to nurture the spring planting, whenever that happens. Embers, on the other hand, is actually doing better again. She perked up after a steroid shot at the vet a week or... Sign in to see full entry.

Relatively quiet...
Sometimes it's good to keep the tv on, even if I'm not watching the show, don't care that much about it. It's a background of human noise. Sometimes, I love the quiet, glad to keep the tv and radio silenced. That's a good time for environmental recordings of water, of distant storm, of birds, of crickets and frogs... When the power goes out, that's a special kind of quiet. Only the battery-driven clocks tick onwards, and sounds from outside get in. It's the feeling that something is about to...
