And winter is back.

From last weekend's near 70 F day, we have, during the week since, hit 0 and spent quite a while in the teens, and now, for the second morning this week, there are several inches of snow on the back porch rail. And it is still snowing. Okay. I called and cancelled the doctor appt I had for 11 this morning, and all the bills I have to get to today, I can pay online. There is plenty of food in the house, and there are things to do upstairs and down. Unless the roof blows off (again) it's all good.... Sign in to see full entry.

the Art Walls

The "Branching Out" wall is complete--for now! Charlie helped with the hanging up of the whole collection of tree photo canvases last night, and I don't believe there are any more in the pipeline. I also have back in my possession the painting my mom did of Kilimanjaro some 50 years ago. I had it before, but gave it to my sister for a while. With her packing and moving, she gave it back to me. Charlotte Franklin was my step-mom, and Julie is her daughter, my step-sister, so it was most... Sign in to see full entry.

Wedesday already?

Sunday it was nearly 70F in the afternoon... This morning, 0, reaching for 30 for a high mid-day. The sun is bright, but not enough to melt the several inches of snow that fell overnight, that we woke up to Monday. But it does help warm the house and especially Embers who soaks it in by the back sliding door every sunny morning. Carpet shampooing is on the schedule this morning as Charlie rented the device to clean the carpet in Vale's room, and I also have a couple on this side of the wall that... Where there's a will... or not...

Yesterday was dark with clouds dropping snow, about 4 inches on the back rail overnight. The night, ironically, was quietly glowing with the ambient light on the snow. Today started dark... as it is, usually at 5am in the winter. I got to thinking as I was waking up about something that has been hanging about for years under the eaves of the Wood of Aging and Responsibility, now and then poking its nose out and winking at me: I have never made a will. Just lately I have been stirring this around... Sign in to see full entry.

Easy Saturday

Door and windows open today... 60+F this afternoon, while the low yesterday morning was in the teens. The gardens and trees will be confused again, especially if this is another weather yo-yo as in previous years. But in the immediate moment, I am enjoying the airs moving through the house. Along with other spring-like impulses, I spent some time yesterday dusting and re-arranging the dining room decorations. It's always refreshing to walk by a table and other surfaces clear and clean, and ready... Sign in to see full entry.

My kitchen is going to the avocados!

I may have mentioned before now that I particularly like those huge, thin-skinned Florida avocados, not only because of their lighter, sweeter flavor, but because the seeds can be so readily started to make some fine house plants. When I saw an ad on Facebook for a Florida company that grows and ships exotic avocados and other fruits, I decided to give it a shot, to try out some of the kinds I've never had before. The box arrived yesterday. I have now 8 very large, very hard green things in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Time and pearls

This weekend, my step-grandson moved from Nevada to here, where he will be moving into the room one of Charlie's housemates will be vacating Feb 1st. The original plan involved our driving the truck out to Nevada where he was living near Carson City. Then suddenly, the evening after I'd been to Estes Park and back, and was tired from the driving, I was reminded of this plan, and that it was nearly NOW to get it done! Driving in winter through mountains and wide, windswept plains in a vehicle... Sign in to see full entry.

Respectability

The topic came up, of returning to an emphasis on and promoting high school classes in things like Home Economics and Shop skills. Kids are being encouraged to choose these because one really can make money with their hands, and gain respect in the community for being good at it. Academics has this seeming of greater respectablility... When Charlie decided to change majors from anthropology to theater, he said, "Mom, I know anthropology is more respectable..." I told him, "Charlie, no one in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Dream worlds

About a week ago, I had a dream with cats in. The one that really stood out was totally clear, like a cat made of water, but it was a live cat. Last night I dreamed again of the other cat that was in that dream. It was a large pale ginger cat, short-haired and clearly well-fed. For some reason, I put him in a medium sized paper bag, the kind with cord handles, and to have him out of the way, hung the bag on a hook on the center of my car's bumper. In the same strange dream-logic, I dropped a... Sign in to see full entry.

Another busy weekend

There was another sci fi/fantasy convention this weekend. This one, COSine, focuses on writers and art. Charlie had a vendor table with some of his work on it, and a big spread of his artistic and crafty items in the art show/auction. He also sat on three panels on the topics of editing, world-building, and I forget what the other was. His little comic book of the incompetent raptors is printed, but the copies didn't make it in time for the weekend. His samples, however, got passed around and... Sign in to see full entry.
