This weekend, my step-grandson moved from Nevada to here, where he will be moving into the room one of Charlie's housemates will be vacating Feb 1st. The original plan involved our driving the truck out to Nevada where he was living near Carson City. Then suddenly, the evening after I'd been to Estes Park and back, and was tired from the driving, I was reminded of this plan, and that it was nearly NOW to get it done! Driving in winter through mountains and wide, windswept plains in a vehicle... Sign in to see full entry.

Respectability
The topic came up, of returning to an emphasis on and promoting high school classes in things like Home Economics and Shop skills. Kids are being encouraged to choose these because one really can make money with their hands, and gain respect in the community for being good at it. Academics has this seeming of greater respectablility... When Charlie decided to change majors from anthropology to theater, he said, "Mom, I know anthropology is more respectable..." I told him, "Charlie, no one in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Dream worlds
About a week ago, I had a dream with cats in. The one that really stood out was totally clear, like a cat made of water, but it was a live cat. Last night I dreamed again of the other cat that was in that dream. It was a large pale ginger cat, short-haired and clearly well-fed. For some reason, I put him in a medium sized paper bag, the kind with cord handles, and to have him out of the way, hung the bag on a hook on the center of my car's bumper. In the same strange dream-logic, I dropped a... Sign in to see full entry.

Another busy weekend
There was another sci fi/fantasy convention this weekend. This one, COSine, focuses on writers and art. Charlie had a vendor table with some of his work on it, and a big spread of his artistic and crafty items in the art show/auction. He also sat on three panels on the topics of editing, world-building, and I forget what the other was. His little comic book of the incompetent raptors is printed, but the copies didn't make it in time for the weekend. His samples, however, got passed around and... Sign in to see full entry.

About my Dad...
All the things I have been recently acquiring from my parents' collected belongings which my sister has stored for years, have certainly brought me to a place of both joy and sadness. The fact is, my father was an interesting man, taught me to appreciate some wonderful things in the world. But he was not a great father. He didn't like children particularly, and when he married my step mother, he informed her that she had a free hand with us, and he only required that she keep us out of his way.... Doctor Visit and Estes Visit
I actually got there early for an 11:30 appointment, actually got in close to the time, a pleasant surprise. I left about 2 pm, after consult, four shots in the arms, a blood draw and some x-rays. At least they didn't have to dilate my eyes! Though it would have been better than last week, because today has been overcast, and driving home would have been a lot pleasanter last week when I had the eye exam, and it was such a lovely sunny day! The trip to Estes Park yesterday was early enough to be... Sign in to see full entry.

Northwards again
This is likely the last time I will be driving up to Estes Park. Yesterday my sister wrote out the biggest check of her life, so she says, buying the apartment she is moving to before the end of the month. She is leaving the house and the fields of elk and horses and the coyote that comes by regularly. She's leaving the house her husband died in (from prostate cancer that was not caught early enough) and where she looked after our Mom as long as she could. The house is already sold, most... Sunday night II
Cold, over-filled from a late lunch, sleepy... I decided to go to bed early, finish the book I was reading, maybe fall asleep before the last page, and probably wake in the wee hours hungry for dinner. Didn't happen. I was cozy enough under the down comforter, had Embers curled up behind my knees, but something untoward occured: I finished the book. And it left me full of thoughts and notions, which I will pursue further in my Loosely Speaking blog. It was closer to 9pm which is my usual... Sign in to see full entry.

First things in the morning
I sit with my cup of coffee, a plate of yellow dragon fruit awaiting my attention, and Embers occupying my chest as this laptop is, well, on my lap. I hear the clock a foot from my ears tocking away... across the room, the fish tank filter runs like a babbling brook, and the soft sound of the electric fireplace heater is accompanied by the sound of the house heating coming on. Outside, a talkative squadron of geese has just flown by, and inside the 'keets are chatting softly... I am thinking of... Sign in to see full entry.

And so it begins...
This weekend marks the end of the holidays quiet, with people getting back into the swing of work, including the politicians. It will be interesting to see who steps out first, attacking or defending the goings-on in DC. Mostly, though, I will ignore them, waiting for actual actions. Charlie has completed his first cartoon book called The Snack Pack, about a troupe of fairly hapless raptors who never quite get a meal. It will be available to his Patreon followers, and in print form at the next... Sign in to see full entry.
