I can re-affirm that birds start their day just after 4 in the morning. I woke that early, before them, and found my brain too busy for further sleep, so turned on the light and read a while--Morgan Llewellan's LION OF IRELAND, a novel of Irish history, the life of Brian Boru--but that did not bring sleep. I got up, made some oatmeal and unloaded the dishwasher. I got on the laptop for bit while I ate. Then--back to bed again. When I woke again, the birds were much noisier and busier, and Pike's... Feeling very Mondayish
It's raining out there... a gentle rain, a 'female' rain as the Hopi identify it, that soaks in quietly and then rises up through the roots, the stems and leaves of the plants that went into the ground a few days ago. This is what they've been waiting for! After nearly 35 years in the Puget Sound area, I got quite used to lots of grey days, lots of rain. One of the attractions of Colorado Springs has always been the sunshine, so much that days of overcast and rain become welcome and enjoyable.... Sign in to see full entry.

ooo, you wee moosies!
It's not quite 6:30 in the evening, but the day is heavy with clouds, and twilight is coming on early. We have not seen as much actual rain as I'd like, for the sake of the garden. Once again, the wee moosies have misjudged: Do not, wee moosies, nibble during the day when hoomans are about! For hoomans are canny and quick of hearing! The tiny nibbling sound was coming from the pantry, to my great chagrin. It's a cupboard of four deep shelves, about two by two feet and 18 inches high, each one. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Productive Saturday!
Blue skies and clouds, breezes blowing in the occasional storm... But we had enough time this morning to do some garage shiftings and shufflings. Charlie does the heavy work, of course, and I do whatever driving comes into it. His motivation today is to create a space in his garage to set up a weight-lifting bench. He and his housemates checked out a local workout joint, and decided it offered too little for the costs, so they'll set up their own. It's going to take a while, and cost a few... Planting in fertile grounds
Good morning, on a sunny day with temps going to the 70s predicted, and also possible thunderstorms. I love a good thunderstorm, but so often they bring devastatingly large hailstones around here. So when we designed the garden boxes last summer, we put hail-shields--hardware cloth--over them. I planted the spinach and squash starts out there yesterday, and covered them over with these shields. On the back porch, I cover over the plants with wire mesh baskets so the rain comes through, but the... Sign in to see full entry.

Thursday adventures
The sore arm is much better today, and my head is less sleepy, so it's on to better things. This morning at 8:30 I'll be on a zoom meeting with ~60 5th graders talking about 'being an author.' This came out of my giving a teacher friend of mine a stack of my SERPENT AND SAINT books for her class. That's 25 of the 60 students. This is a program they have going during these pandemic times, blending classrooms for special events. It will only be half an hour, maybe a bit more, and I expect after... Sign in to see full entry.

PS--About those shots...
As it happens, the right arm where the shingles shot went in is the one that's sore today. The tetanus arm is fine, no tenderness at all! Expecting the reverse, I chose the order of the arms. Well, it isn't crippling, just annoying, and it will soon pass! Temps are heading back up today, and way up tomorrow. I'm thinking this afternoon will be time to put the garden outside again, and reclaim my table! Goldiec knows the joy of getting the table back, and having a real spring day. Happy... Check up time!
Here it is evening again, after a day of busy-ness. It started with a doctor appointment for myself, not Embers this time. I met my new primary doc and we spent some time getting acquainted. She looked over my records, and answered questions about current concerns. It's a new facility with shiny technologies. For instance, there's no scale to stand on: the chair has the scale built in! And it weighed me very close to what my home scale says. That's a first! Usually, doctor-scales add 10 lbs!... Sign in to see full entry.

Dramas dark and deep and long...
It's a return of spring today, warm and sunny, and the plants are again on the back porch. It's another return, too. This evening will bring the first live theater we've attended since all this pandemic moved in and changed our lives. MEDEA is being presented by the theater students of the U of Colorado Colorado Springs. This is Charlie's alma mater and promises to be a beautiful offering, directed by Kevin Landis. He is the prof responsible for bringing some of the finest theater and... Sign in to see full entry.
