quiet, peaceful days

The mountains are gleaming with morning light--So nice to see them clearly again! The winds aloft have changed, not the western wildfires. Fires in our west, in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey... Loss and heartbreak... I am not forgetting as I sit and gaze at the mountains beyond my own green garden. Never take blessings and good fortunes for granted! It's just over 80F at 11AM, and humidity is in the 20s. They promise isolated and scattered thunderstorms between 2-4pm. I suppose 'isolated' means one... Sign in to see full entry.

How the garden grows!

Another less-hot day, here, with clear skies and no hint of storm coming over the mountains. This is a good time of year to shop garden centers when they are eager to unload past-their-prime plants. At Lowes yesterday I looked around and came home with a mini-tomato plant that looked rather tired, and had a good crop ready to pick. As bedraggled as it was, it was half price, too. I also picked up a large hanging pot of dark red geraniums that needed dead-heading, but had a goodly number of buds... Sign in to see full entry.

The veil is lifted

It rained here last night, not with thunder and lightning, but just a quiet, whispering rain. This morning, the mountains are visible again. My mind feels clearer, too. Today will be cooler than yesterday by 10 degrees. And I see cirrus clouds high in the sky, portending more rain coming! I am not sure how much the smoke in the air actually affects us physically. Mentally, emotionally it burdens us, and seeing the western skyline this morning lifts that weight from the heart. Ditto, for the... Sign in to see full entry.

Another Thursday

Well, it's BBQ day again, and I have shrimp and sliced beef marinating, and a friend who will be coming over after she's done with work. This morning I was not particularly verbal, so spent most of the morning up-dating and re-editing the Forbidden City. Breakfast was soup--chicken noodle with an egg poached in it. And coffee. And a buttered toasted sourdough english muffin. Here it is almost half past 2 and I am just beginning to feel a bit hungry. I suppose I will have to do something about... Sign in to see full entry.

And here it is: Tomorrow!

Wednesday, actually, and Today. More re-arranging has happened. When I get tired of the view from my bed, it makes it harder to sleep. Whether that makes sense or not, I leave to you. But it works. However, my bed is currently in the only position in the room that it can be, and still be near enough the door to the deck to get the night airs and breezes. Or to close them off in the hours before dawn, if it gets too chilly. So yesterday, I made a change that didn't actually require moving the... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday morning

Thanks for all your comments yesterday! And it looks like we are all looking for rain to clear the air, to water the gardens... The grace of rain! Here, the mountains are still under the pall of all the western wildfires, but overhead the sky is blue and this morning is filled with the wispy cirrus clouds that promise rain in the next few days. According to the weather forecast, it won't get here before Friday, but the clouds are usually not that far off a weather-change. Temps will remain... Sign in to see full entry.

Quiet Monday

For another day, the mountains are a mere suggestion on the western skyline, and while only low 90 F temps, it is not the nicest of days. What we really need is some long and thorough rainfall to cleanse the air! But that is not in the forecast until the end of the week, and we all know how weather predictions change. So, I am hoping for that rain sooner! Charlie finished another bear, posted on Twitter, and just like that, it was sold! Today I will drive him to the UPS store beside my credit... Sunday morning under haze

There are no mountains in view today. The smoke haze filters the sunlight to a sort of orangey color, and the haze is evident looking even a block away. It is not imagination if you think you smell smoke. From a cool overnight of ~50, we expect a jump of 40 degrees by afternoon. I woke early and went out to check for zucchini and yellow crook-necks. I found not much of either, but did collect some tomatoes and little peas. There is a new squash-family item blooming with a very pretty white... Sign in to see full entry.

The heat came back the very next day...

...and will be with us for the next couple of days, They say. And, thanks to the upper air currents, we expect smoke haze from the western wildfires to be increasing. I can see the mountains today, but maybe not so much later. Today was a big watering day, as plants front and back were showing sad faces. More tomatoes shifted from the vine to the kitchen. I'm thinking BLT on taco-wraps later! I also need to check down among the squash blossoms and leaves for large enough items to bring in. I... Sign in to see full entry.
