Elder Cat Embers, since I adopted her 5 years ago, has had mouth troubles. It's called stomatitis, and is, more or less, an autoimmune disease that manifests as being, essentially, allergic to her teeth. So we had the teeth, mostly--except for, ironically, her canines--surgically removed. And she takes steroids daily, to suppress the condition. So, I have only just realized why she's been shying from her water bowl even when it is freshly filled: The cold water hurts her mouth. Since I have... Sign in to see full entry.

Yoyo Winter
The snow began yesterday evening, falling through near freezing air, so large, fluffy flakes. There is now, around 9:15 AM, a depth of nearly a foot. It will reach it, if it continues much longer. So, the house being all close and kitcheny, I have done the counter-intuitive: Doors and windows are open, overhead fan is on, heat is on higher than usual. It's time to freshen up! The doves are in residence on the deck, well out of the falling snow. I see they are adding twigs to the nest, and I'm... Sign in to see full entry.

Another launch...!
In less than two minutes now, another rocket will launch on its way to the International Space Station. Not as big a deal as manned flights or journeys to other worlds, but even so, I watch with fascination and a kind of elation only a little dimmed by the awareness that things can go terribly, fatally wrong in an instant. I was in 4th grade when the teachers wheeled a tv on a tall cart into the classroom to watch John Glenn launch into orbit, and at that age could hardly comprehend the enormity... bad luck/good luck
I had luck today. Days of staying home, nights of single-digit and below-zero temperatures... Today's shopping plans were delayed when the truck frantically did not start. It did some odd pulsating stutters, but that was it. It sounded like bad luck, and no groceries. The AAA agent on the phone offered me a choice: one rescuer brings just the jump start, the other is prepared to check battery and alternator, and carries new batteries on board just in case. I asked which could get here sooner.... Sign in to see full entry.

Balmy days!
It's still cold cold cold at night, but days are nearly up to freezing and there is sunshine, which is certainly cheering, as is having both hot and cold running water in the upstairs bathroom! Snow is melting, though the street in front of the house is still unbroken white, and snow is expected today. But tomorrow--much warmer! There have been some hiccups and delays in getting my little book set up for becoming an actual book. Perhaps today it will all be complete and ready to produce galleys... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday Freezy Sunday
Low for today: -14 F! The high: -1. It is snowing here, just lightly, with 2-3 inches already accumulated and -6 at 8 am. I feel so lucky to have a heated home, enough food, and no need to go outside! I wish I could share this indoor warmth with the doves, with all the little birds outside, and the wandering cats and the lost dogs. My heart aches for the people who have no place to go, too. Happy Valentine's Day! Stay warm! Sign in to see full entry.

Staying warm...
At 9 this morning, the outside temperature was just a bit over 0 F. Tomorrow is predicted to be even colder. Watching out for polar bears, still... in case they are looking for a warm place to hang out. The sun is only at times barely discernible through today's featurless overcast. I need to get some more dyes! The third Teema blanket has come out a soft olive green. Maybe more in the shade of cream of asparagus soup. All the tassels held together on this one, unlike last night's item where... Sign in to see full entry.

Freezey Friday
I did not resist the temptation to acquire a few more Teema blankets while they are still on sale... Now I have a nice dark chocolate brown one, and there is one sort of a blue/teal in the dryer now. I love textiles and textures, and I love colors! I should go into business! Speaking of business, I've begun to set up the book on the publishing site, and all went well enough until I realized I need some updated pdfs from the formatter, and she is away all weekend. So the next step is delayed... Sign in to see full entry.

Vet report
Embers' test results show most everything pretty good, but that it is time to start feeding her a renal-support kind of food. Well, that isn't terribly bad news. I will look on Chewey.com to see their price for the particular food. We have had chilly days lately, but I hear that Saturday's high is predicted to be 14F. The low on Saturday, -3, and Sunday, -7. I guess it will be stay home, extra sweater days. Today, after watching the trial proceedings, Charlie and I went out to the grocery store... Sign in to see full entry.

Midweek this and that
Embers is feeling better today, and smelling better, as the medicinal aromas acquired yesterday at the vet have dissipated. And she seems to be holding no grudges for the No Good Very Bad Day. She is still intent on being on me, wherever I go, whatever I am trying to actually get done. I wish there was some way to know more of her history before she ended up in the rescue organization that sent her to the pet store where I found her. How many people did she attach to? How did she lose them? Why... Sign in to see full entry.
