Today suddenly became the day to deep-clean the kitchen. It happens incrementally, the one-step-at-a-time strategy until it's all done. There's still a ways to go, but every bit accomplished feels very satisfying! Laundry is getting done, too. It's something about the last days of the year, the last chance to start a new year fresh. Some years I think about it, but never get around to bothering. This year, though, I find myself wanting to do it, not for any possible visitors to the house, since... Sign in to see full entry.

The Yule Forest Primeval
This is what happens when you let Charlie decide the decorations... https://flic.kr/s/aHsmSJXKEm We had a very quiet, low-key day that was about the lights and artistry and the tasty food, and our far-flung family meeting on a live video call. (There are screen-shots of the family, but those are not for sharing without permissions all around.) On Christmas Eve, we all got together there to share some readings of kids' Christmas books and poems. Yesterday we gathered again to share the opening of... Sign in to see full entry.

Christmas Eve...
I woke this morning with the wind blowing and gusting outside the glass door by my bed which I leave slightly a-gape even in winter: I just sleep better with fresh air! Sun was well up by 8, and the day looks like a sunny one and is forecast to be not quite as cold as yesterday. While I went through the last cuddles with the warm blankets, I listened to Beethoven's First Symphony. Later, I'll hear the Second and Third, and work my way through to the Ninth by this evening. It's a new tradition... Sign in to see full entry.

The Musics of Christmas...
High winds blew a cold wave in, but the winds are ceasing early this afternoon, and the cold will be dispersing over the end of the week to a warm Sunday forecast. Heh... last summer, a 60F day was chilly! I have to confess without shame, I really don't like modern Christmas music. In fact, it makes me cringe, most of it is so tone-deaf to how so many Americans actually experience the holidays. I hate that all its giggly happy promises are played in malls and stores, setting up kids for... Sign in to see full entry.

morning mystery
I woke this morning around 6 AM, and though there was still that tugging to go back to sleep, several things got me out of bed. A couple were biologic, and one was the knowledge that getting up and looking outside before dawn has its rewards. Today, it was seeing a grey-cloud streaked sky, slightly blushing with the coming dawn, and shining brightly in a space between the clouds, Venus! And those blushing clouds promised a pretty sunrise within the hour. So I went about morning business, making... Sign in to see full entry.

Looming horizons
Still having fun with those turkish cotton waffle-weave blankets and towels! They take dyes so well! This could become addictive! Maybe I should go into business... Sun is out again today, and it is cold, expected to rise to chilly this afternoon. Then temps in the teens F tonight again. Here beside the mountains, the sun goes below the horizon a little after 4pm/1600 hrs. For another couple of weeks, earlier and earlier... But then, Solstice! And the days lengthen again, to the great lightening... Sign in to see full entry.

another Cleveland memory
It is snowing now, small flakes slowly accumulating. I've made oatmeal for breakfast. Pat's post yesterday about Wandering Minstrels reminded me of the preachers that wandered around Cleveland back in the early 70s when I was in college. I saw them around the lake--a large pond, really--in front of the Cleveland Museum of Art. In front of the Museum is Rodin's sculpture, one of the original bronzes that he cast, The Thinker. This one is not like the few others that remain in the world. This is... Sign in to see full entry.

And so it begins...
It has been such an exhausting year, especially for the heart and mind, it has taken me a while to get into even a little Holiday spirit. No music yet... no decor. I have not yet hung the garland on the door, though it sits right here on the floor beside the shelves beside the door. (I couldn't think of what to call it yesterday, this addled brain would not supply the conventional word, but did offer up 'Door Wig.') But I needed the box in which were stored last year's Village, the David Winter... Sign in to see full entry.

Addenda to yesterday's post about dyeing.
https://teema.co/collections/all/products/the-waffle-blanket-bundle This link shows you the colors Teema produces. (The one they call 'ice' is more creamy than pale blue, at least the shipment I got. It made a nice lilac, though.) And these are my dyed colors: https://flic.kr/ps/rhS1C Sign in to see full entry.
