In one word-- Fantastic! In two words-- Take tissue. No spoilers here... It is not one to mention that Colm Wilkinson who has starred as Jean Valjean in the past, and who sang that role in the Tenth Anniversary concert, has another in this movie version: the bishop who saves Jean Valjean from himself, early in the story. Of course, one of the great advantages of making a movie of a play is that we are not confined to a single stage with moveable sets. "Les Mis" takes full advantage, creates a... Ah. Christmas!
We had a quiet, happy day that started with Charlie coming out of his room, looking at the spread under the tree, and saying, "All those presents under the tree are really starting to piss me off. We should do something about it." So, we did. Not too much later, he made crepes for breakfast, and they were lovely! He always uses lemon juice and powedered sugar on his. I used the remains of the mulled cider we made the night before, and allowed to boil down to syrup. Apple cider with lemon, lime... Sign in to see full entry.

Well, that's it then...
We have just translated into a world exactly like the one that just ended. Here's a bit of chat my son had this morning on FaceBook. Charlie: Personally, I'm glad that the Mayan thing is false... mostly because I would be PISSED if I never got to see the new Les Miserables. And I, of course, await the coming of our saurian overlords from space, but even if I were privy to their invasion plans, I wouldn't want to upset them by pulling a Maury Povich and announcing their plans to the world. The... Sign in to see full entry.
Today I am boiling hemp.
Not for soup, no. Hemp twine is waxed, I am not sure why exactly. It makes it harder to use, like starch can make a shirt hard to wear, especially if you can't bend your arms. So, to use it as yarn, I boil the wax out of it. First, the ball has to be unwound into a skein, for which I have devised a piece of cardboard, as the forearm wind makes an unweildy hank that tangles. So I wind it onto the cardboard, and secure the loops in two places. Then, into the pot with it. If dyed, a lot of the dye... Sign in to see full entry.

Our tree is up!
I know some folks set up their Christmas tree as soon as Thanksgiving is cleaned up. We have always waited. If it goes up too early, by Christmas, it is old and withery, and no longer a happy surprise each time we come into the room. Our tradition, when the first kid was a creeper, in the days of poorness, we waited until Christmas Eve, and got one of the leftover trees in abandoned tree lots, for free. One year, we got two imperfect ones, and set them up together, like an arbor, over the... Sign in to see full entry.

19,997 clicks... and THE HOBBIT
It's 9 AM in these parts... I think this will be the day! Who will click that 20,000th click...? It will be someone who comments, I hope, or at least leaves a calling card... My son and I went to two shows yesterday. The first was the Moss Hart and George Kaufman play, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, about a wonderfully zany family whose ingenue daughter brings home her fiance, the boss's son, and what happens when he brings his very proper parents over for dinner on the wrong night. This was a... Sign in to see full entry.

I done it!
Typed up a cover letter, assembled the first 10 pages of THE HERETICS, wrote a 1-page synopsis of a 650 page manuscript, and sent the whole package to an agent whose name and address have been languishing in my computer for a couple of months now. By February I hope to get back a request for more. I doubt you can walk around, digits crossed for that length of time, but keep your pom-poms handy to raise a cheer when the time is right!
