Birthday!

Today has been my 66th birthday. Charlie and I had breakfast at a very nice new-to-the-Springs place called First Watch, then took a drive about 7 miles up the Pike's Peak Highway to see the golden aspens. It was probably one of the last fine days for such an excursion: by the weekend, there will be snow gathering on the peaks. Sunday night, I will be bringing in the porch plants. Rumor has it that this will be a long, cold, snowy winter, unlike the previous two. After dinner, we went down to... Sign in to see full entry.

Cooking artichokes

I like artichokes. They are tasty with mayonaise, or olive oil and salt, as a friend of mine used to eat them. I have come up with a way to cook them so they can be served to people who are a bit skeptical of "those chokey things." Baked, so they don't soak up water; foil-wrapped so they steam in their own juices and don't get all dried out. Here are the photos of the steps taken: https://flic.kr/p/2bC3xS4 (Go to this one and click to the left. Otherwise, it is how to uncook an artichoke.) Sign in to see full entry.

Plans gone awry...

This weekend was full of plans! For a moment, they included going to the zoo with a friend and her two young lady daughters, but I knew when I woke up that my back was not going to the zoo. Then, as it happened, she was not up for much either: She has been having some 'minor' surgeries to deal with melanomas, and 'minor' it seems can be quite debilitating in a practical sense. So there was no zoo, and no after-zoo party at my house to celebrate all the birthdays they and Charlie and I have in... Sign in to see full entry.

Luck

Just a little moment of inattention... then suddenly seeing that the line of cars ahead, coming up fast, was not moving though their light was green and their tail-lights were dark! I floored, absolutely floored the brake pedal, as everything loose in the pickup flew forwards, and the brakes slipped and stuttered... and the truck stopped about 5 feet behind the little car in front. In the mirror, I saw the car behind me brake hard and swerve into the right lane to avoid hitting me. Nothing... Sign in to see full entry.

Midweek adventures

Autumn blustered in yesterday, bringing the first leaves down, and the temperatures, too. This morning it was 42F. Closing doors and windows at night time. There is news on the costumery front: We have decided to upgrade the storage unit to a 10X40 with front and back garage-door access. It will make so much difference in how we store stuff, where now we have to get through the back of the costume collection to access any of the random other stuff stored behind it. The additional cost of it is... Sign in to see full entry.

Woohoo!

I saw a list posted on Facebook about things to do when you get older. The first one was, Spend your money. And then, there is that NextVacay.com that finds low fares to... well, could be anywhere. They came up with one yesterday that looked very attractive. So--Charlie and I are going to Beijing for a week in April for less than $1000 for both of us, not each, and that's inside the plane! Hotels are inexpensive, I have looked up some costs there, and they range from $30/night on up to lots and... Sign in to see full entry.

Query Quora...

Quora is a place online, the word 'platform' might apply, where anyone can post a question, and the community of Quora is invited to answer it. Some of the questions are silly, go-look-it-up kinds of questions, or so poorly worded that they make no sense. It is a global thing, and English is not everyone's first language which accounts for some of the odd wordings and assumptions inherent in some questions. But many of them are intriguing, and really do rouse the imagination and the teacher, the... Sign in to see full entry.

On the boards again...

Charlie is in rehearsals again. The show is THE BOYS NEXT DOOR by Tom Griffin. It is about four mentally disabled men living in an apartment together, and their burnt-out social worker, who is ready to make a career change. This is called a comedy, and there are laughs in it, but it is also a drama, and kind of heart-wrenching, as these characters try their best to live in a complicated, often unkind world. The real challenge of the play is to put it on in a way that moves the audience to laugh... Sign in to see full entry.

Downers

Last night when the sun went down, and the temperature descended from 90s down through the 80s, into 70s, I breathed such a sigh of relief... Too hot, and I am useless, totally unmotivated, lethargic, and kinda pissed off. The weather report last night, though, promised a high of 80 for today. Another heat spell out-lasted! Then, this morning, the forecast was for 89F, teasing with a suggestion of the potential of a possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon, which could cool the day down.... Small black cat sighting

Twice now, in the past week, a small black cat has appeared at the back door to vex Embers. We do get such occasional visitors, but this one is smaller and better groomed that some. For this reason I guessed he isn't a stray, just on walk-about. He has a collar, so somone cares. But because of Embers' extreme opinions, I have not invited him in. Then, yesterday I saw a Lost Cat sign in the neighborhood, and it could well be this little guy. So I called and spoke with the owner. Kitty's name is... Sign in to see full entry.
