Yesterday started out murky with wildfire residue in the air that made the sunlight murky and orange-ish. It went on to become hot, in the 90s, until late in the afternoon when rumbles in the sky heralded relief. It rained then, off and on, cooling and clearing the air, into the night. This morning is brighter, and the temps are supposed to top out below 80F. I hope your morning is brighter and cooler, too! The goldfinches have finished off the net of thistle-seeds that has been hanging off the... Sign in to see full entry.

Preparedness
So tired of the hot days... too-warm nights! I finally shifted my computer desk downstairs where the temps are about 10-15 degrees lower. The guest room futon bed has been folded up to make more room in the room, and the closet has been cleared of all costumery--which leaves it open for a large-ish 'galleria' chair to fit back in there, and becomes a desk-nook instead of just a closet. This closet, by the way, is also my tornado shelter. We do get some wild winds and storms here in the summer,... Sign in to see full entry.

busy, busy...
The past several days have been busy at the storage unit, as Charlie and I did some massive rearranging. We keep all the theatrical stuff there including furniture and strange devices, like the 'thunder sheet' and the 'wind machine.' There is even a little door about the right size for gnomes... about 2 feet high. (It has a knob on each side, and a framework around it so it stands up. It's purpose for being...? Door-slams for radio or sound-effects work.) And, of course, the costumery. One day... Sign in to see full entry.

Teaching and learning...
Reveling in a cool day, before the temps begin to rise again to the 90s later this week. I have a new writer-coaching client! It's someone who has a great imagination, an interesting story to tell, but not the writing skills that are needed to convey it. Sometimes you have to start with what I call The Utter Basics, and internalize them so they flow naturally with the writing process. It's basics of sentence structure, punctuation, paragraphing... It's tense-consistency, and smooth transitions,... Sign in to see full entry.

Breakfast... and Second Breakfast
This was one of those mornings when I wake really, really hungry! and yet, still too groggy to do anything complicated. The temptation is great to head straight to toast and all those carbs I am trying to avoid. Happily, I had some lovely big black olives in the fridge, and they nicely sufficed--for a while! Long enough to check my emails and blogs and facebook... Around 10, I started thinking about real breakfast. Here's what happened: I baked some salmon that I caught fresh in the store... Relief...
The temperatures are not expected to reach 90F here the rest of the week, and today the predicted high today is 83. What a relief! The heat is so ennervating, practically nothing gets done on those hot days even if it only requires thought and not much physical activity. Today I sent in our new estimate for what we need to be paid for taking the Compass Rose Traveling Theater up to Northglenn, a few miles north of Denver, for their annual 2-day Pirate Fest. It is a bit more than we've asked... Sign in to see full entry.

Last weekend
Charlie and I spent most of the weekend--Thursday through Saturday--at the 2018 Myths and Legends/WesterCon in Denver. He set up a table in the art show/auction, while I just wandered about and got my tribble autographed by David Gerrold whose idea tribbles were ~50 years ago in the original STAR TREK series. Oh, and taking pictures. Not a lot of pictures, and not the best... but enough to get across the idea. At these fan conventions, there is much emphasis on costuming and role-playing. There... After a day of rest...
Yesterday I had good intentions... well, productive intentions, to clean the kitchen, including the fridge, to unpack from WesterCon and put things away, including a couple of new Peri Charlifu bowls, a pair of little tea bowls, and a board game about space and astronomy. Oh, and a nice print called Dragons in the Mist. Of course, to transfer and edit photos to put up on Flickr... Then it got hot. So I spent the whole day, after some morning grocery shopping with Charlie, on my online game,... Sign in to see full entry.

Speaking of New Zealand...
Yesterday at WesterCon, I chatted a while with some folks who are putting in a bid for the 2020 WorldCon to be held in Wellington, NZ. I signed up as a supporter and bought the T-shirt, because it has the lovely silver fern symbol, and also got a little ribbon/badge that says: To boldly go there and back again! It is a good time to start planning that trip! We attended a morning chat session with David Gerrold whose phone went off in the midst of our questions and answers. He answered it, said...
