The long day before...

So, we decided not to take the big tent, but then got thinking how useful a small tent could be, to have some away-from-the-madding-crowd space. I spent the next several hours visiting every place I could think of where tents are sold. REI, Target, Big 5, Sears, and Dick's, where I finally settled on one that will do. It is tall enough, big enough, easy to put up enough. Then, on a less-considered but reasonable impulse, bought one an actually comfortable camp chair. Not just a chair... a... Getting ready...

The Northglenn Pirate Fest is happening this weekend--Friday and Saturday--just north of Denver. It is our third year providing their second stage for various events. My step-grandson, Vale, arrives this afternoon from Nevada. He has also been with us every year as Charlie's Assistant Roustabout: Together, they set up the stage and do all the heavy lifting after I have done all the driving. Today we will finalize the set decor, too, and re-hang the sign on the doors which was so weathered, it... Sign in to see full entry.

Thoughts on Vietnam

I have been watching Ken Burns' documentary series about the Vietnam War. I was just beginning to notice the world around when we became enmeshed in the Vietnam War, and it was a constant element of my life from grade 3 up through college. Nightly body-counts; fears and sorrows for the brothers and sons of people I knew; the moral questions, challenges, doubts that grew to reach and define personal tolerances and limits--more than a decade of a hideous monster hovering over life in the United... 33!

This time in the morning, 33 years ago, I had just seen Charlie for the first time. He certainly has grown since then! https://flic.kr/s/aHsjtHWmcm Here are a few of his growing-up pictures... Sign in to see full entry.

Good day!

After dropping Charlie off at work, I took my photo canvasses to the Academy Art and Frame shop a few miles away, and discovered that the person I needed to see to drop off my work was not going to be in until 1pm. So that gave me a couple of hours to do other things in the neighborhood. I went thrift-store shopping--sale day on Tuesday--and found some interesting and useful items including several pieces for the costume collection and the perfect shirt for one of Charlie's characters. He has... Sign in to see full entry.

TV for TAPS

All is well again between Embers and me. By evening she was upturned on my lap and purring loudlier than usual. Her blood-work returned with no problems. I have found another show to watch through all its few episodes. This is one especially for our TAPS who loves wandering trails. It is called WALKING THROUGH HISTORY. A fellow named Tony Robinson strolls along British footpaths talking about the historical events that happened there. The history is great to put together with the scenery, and... Embers doesn't like it.

Embers had one of those terrible excursions to the vet this morning, the first well-cat check since I've had her, as she was never well before. She was very distressed on the ride there, arrived panting heavily--not a good sign in an elderly cat--so they took her back immediately and gave her oxygen to calm her down. The carrier required some cleanup, and so did she. The rest of the visit was of no great upset: she had her shots, a couple of needles for fluid extractions, and the worst--a nail... I met Billy Boyd today.

If the name doesn't ring a bell, think of Pippin Took in LORD OF THE RINGS, and Bonden in MASTER AND COMMANDER. Pippin and his best friend Merry start off in LOTR as comic relief and end the long journey as heroes. With all the disgruntles I feel about some of Peter Jackson's artistic choices for this tale, I have always felt that he totally nailed it in his casting of the hobbits. They have always been my favorites. Sometime around 2005, I wrote a poem, DUET, in which they have a chat. This... Sign in to see full entry.

One clear day...

By the afternoon of the crystal clear morning a couple of days ago, the smokey haze was back, and even though we are having sunny days, they are not clear. The gallery curator says she wants to hang several of my pieces on consignment, as opposed to it being a gallery show. So I have ordered seven new ones with the proper backings for wire-hanging. I've chosen four from Whitby Abbey and two from Whalley Abbey, one from Sawley Abbey. They go in on Sept 5. I've been reading HAVING OUR SAY, the... Sign in to see full entry.

Lovely day!

The past several days of quiet rainfall have gently cleaned the air at last, and the mountains are back, clear as clear alongside Colorado Springs. It will be warm today, mid 80s, so summer is quite done with us. I still hope for a long, long autumn. An e-mail came yesterday from a local frame-shop/gallery. Several months ago I had a conversation with the owners about displaying my photography. I'll call them later this morning. The curator is interested particularly in my "Rubble" collection....
