It was the ideal job when he started...

The company he is working for has just fired his manager for simply inquiring about what they expect as proper notice for resignation. This is not the first weird, crazy thing they have done lately, either. They switched up the management team, brought in some new people to manage his manager, and now they will replace her with someone more like them. He really can't rely on working there much longer on the original terms which allowed him to pursue his arts even if only part-time, but on a... Sign in to see full entry.

Finally we know!

Charlie got back the test results from his first medical checkup in years. I have worried about whether or not he has joined the family diabetic club--and in fact, he has not. His numbers point to what might be called pre-pre-diabetes, so eating smarter starting now, he can turn the trend around. And, having heard it from a medical professional, he is listening. After the medical appointment, we went out to see a movie that just came out: THE LION KING. He has seen it on Broadway, I saw the... Sign in to see full entry.

and the doves are back...

They are busily adding twigs to the nest--they probably can't help themselves--and it looks like they will be going for a 4th brood. The first was too early, and failed for maybe a combination of reasons: the weather was too cold, and the old nest was too small. It was after that they adopted the new nesting basket we hung up for them. They do seem to be getting used to my comings and goings out on the deck. I watch them, they watch me... If they seem nervous, I take a step or two back. Today is... Sign in to see full entry.

Cool of the evening

The wind is blowing-- cool air comes down out of the mountains, night comes over the sky filled with clouds. Summer heat flees on the wind, last of the summer darkens with the end of the day. Curtains billow like sails out into the air and in again, floating on the wind on its changes. I turn off the fans, false winds, open all the windows, all the doors and let in the airs of change. out of the archives...

Heat of the Day The sun glares down on white concrete that once warmed, now stings little bare feet. Upon the couch, or floor or chair or... really, anywhere a cat can go, limbs akimbo, bellyfur exposed, she stretches out long as cat can be, cat-naps away the heat of the day. It's cool, man...

It is a lovely morning, and the forecast for both thunderstorms and overall cooler temps is encouraging. I am hoping this trend sweeps eastward and brings relief across the midwest, all the way to the coast. I never loved the tropical summers of the east coast where I grew up. I hated the oppressive humidity even more than the heat. The only times of day that were bearable were early morning and night, unless a storm swept away the heat. I have always loved those storms. Sitting here with... Sign in to see full entry.

Relief!

Heavy rains, thunder and lightning, hail... and so the heat has broken and the whisper of the a/c has ceased for now. Now, nearing sunset, there is a strange golden light filling the air. The sun is lowering, limning the hem of the cloud cover, and on the other side of the sky, it is steel grey, storm-heavy... Got a few shots before the battery died: https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/58MX45 There was also a flash flood warning broadcast to phones throughout the land, so on the way home... telling tales...

Kabu mentions how Wiley likes to hear her stories of her growing up, and that made me think of what stories I might tell. There was the mouse-hunt in the barn, when I was 4 or 5. We loved playing in the hay barn, jumping from the loft down into the big loose haystack beneath. I spotted a mouse up in the loft one day, and decided I would catch it, but of course, I kept missing the scampering little guy. Finally, I jumped for it and went right over the edge to the loose hay below. I complained to... Sign in to see full entry.

In the cool of the day...

It is not quite 7am here, and I have been up for a couple of hours. It is cool out, temps moving up towards the 70s. By the time it gets to the 80s, I will be done with getting much done. I don't function well in heat. It will be near 100 F this afternoon, and the new a/c unit will keep it to around 80 indoors. Anyway, this is why I like waking early this time of year. This is the only time of day to do any oven stuff. So this morning I got busy right off, cutting up some carrots and cauliflower... Sign in to see full entry.

To all the folks...

So, tomorrow is forecast to be HOT! And it will get hotter through the weekend. It will be a good day to stay in some a/c with an endless ice-water, maybe with some lemon in it... I'm thinking of you, Pat, and Taps, and FSI, and everyone else being swept along on the same wave. The map I see is only the eastern and midwestern US, but I don't imagine Canada is really being spared. It will be hot here, but we are only at the edge of it, and I am also thinking it might be a nice day to go up into... Sign in to see full entry.
