Two AM. We both woke up. I looked around and saw my dachshund sitting up, his head alert, right beside my sleeping bag. He'd focused on the dark outside the three-walled mountain shelter. Unmoving, he began to growl so low I hardly heard it. No other sound except the crickets, but he knew..... what?... Sign in to see full entry.

DINOSAUR DIGESTION
That's the thought that comes to mind each time I feel my car creep forward into hi-tech robot world, with shift in neutral, windows closed, steering wheel left all alone, nosing into dancing strips that spin and flog with thrash and splash of sloppy slapping soapy leather making lather whorls all... A BALLAD OF THE AXE AND CHAINSAW
I pull the lanyard on my chainsaw, hear ir pop and stutter live. Beast that it is, it wants to wander, chew on something that's nearby. "You want this tree cut up on not? I run on gas, can't wait all day. I do what I do fast and well. What happens next is up to you." I set its racing teeth to work,... Sign in to see full entry.

EQUINOX
That night the rowdy wind and rain came marauding through my woods, vandalizing what was left of gaudy autumn revelry. I set my clocks back, lit the fire, learned the feel of shorter days, waited for the snow that would, like leaves, outstay its welcome. Sign in to see full entry.

NUTRITION'S MYSTERIES
I always have my pizza cut in pieces six, not eight. I switched to Angel Hair, not Ziti, years and years ago, I never eat Milk Duds alone but always with a Diet Coke; I put the gravy on the veggies, never on the mashed. Chips Ahoy? I only eat the broken ones, of course. For breakfast in the diner,... Sign in to see full entry.

A PEEK INSIDE ONE'S WRISTWATCH
Poised a-toetip on a jewel, golden wee-toothed wafer wheel swings so freely back and forth. Below, in steady increments, escapement never really does, but creeps one notch with every pulse. Intricate beyond belief, all collude to turn three hands at different speeds that never vary, patiently... Sign in to see full entry.

WHEN THE KINGDOM GOES TO WAR
Chessmen don't all act the same. Rooks command the avenues with final devastating wrath that clears lanes north, south, east, and west.. Bishops, on the other hand, standing closer to the throne, know the power of oblique yet lethal stroke of indirection. Horseborne knights strike crookedly, tire... Sign in to see full entry.
