Re: Re: Re: Re:Truth be told, I press a battery-operated remote that ignites a flame
I'm sure 47 must have been a tough winter so soon after the war.  I'm sorry but I don't understand why you were delivering paraffin.  What am I missing?  As for stuffing newspapers, my father was a repairman for the New York City Fire Department  His wages were frozen at the Depression level till 1948, the year he died.  Back then, he felt lucky to have a job at all.   He often spoke of using newspaper that way during the winter while repairing public fire alarm boxes.  Me and my ceramic logs are a good gauge of how far I've come, thanks to the sendoff he and my mom gave me.  Thanks for the answer.  Last winter was tough over here, too. - Bob

Re: Re: Re:Truth be told, I press a battery-operated remote that ignites a flame
Last winter was supposed to be the coldest for years Bob, but I never felt it much, Usually the days are wet and chilly did you know more folk die in England from chills than in Russia because people do not wrap up sufficiently. Source the television. 47 was a cold Winter here in those days one wore leather boots studded with nails the coldest things in creation ice stuck to the soles. I was only a lad delivering paraffin wet through most days until the overcoat was too heavy to bear. Changed for another could not stop as there were no lights. A bit of relief shove newspapers inside ones trousers to keep the knees from freezing.

Re: Re:Truth be told, I press a battery-operated remote that ignites a flame
beneath the fake ceramic logs that are so hard to wax poetic about.  As for the snow, yes, I loved it the first thirteen times last winter.  The joys of shoveling and sliding wear thin by March.  I became a great fan of the spring.  When Ginny sais we should move to Florida, I used to say no, I loved to watch the change of seasons
here up north.  I think the last time I said that was 1998. Actually, what are YOUR winters like?- Bob

Re: a retreat today...Indian summer with a wonderful warm day.
Yes, enjoy the retreat.  This time of year always makes me reflect on how we should enjoy life and all beautiful things while we still have them. - Bob

Crikey Bob what do you burn. Or does lighting the fire mean flicking a switch. You know you love the snow, I am sure you will welcome it as the whim takes you. Keep your hat on if you feel cold.
