What the…?

I have a few computer glitches (okay more than a few, and a little more serious than simple glitches), miss most of a few days of blogging (okay, most of a lot of days) and the neighborhood goes a little crazy. I’m not even sure I’ve got all of the details correct, much less the names and dates, but... Sign in to see full entry.

Remember the old cigarette slogan, “I’d walk a mile for a Camel?”

I want a cigarette so damned bad I’m tempted to walk the eight miles round trip to the nearest 24-hr. convenience store for a pack of anything that can be lit up and inhaled. Camel, Chesterfield, Pall Mall, Lucky Strike -- any of them would do. So would a Marlboro, a cheap generic, or a pouch of... Sign in to see full entry.

The weekend was a bust.

That’s not much of a headline for the Monday morning edition of the notapoet news. But I calls them as I sees them. Between unexpected extra work for the local newspaper and continuing problems with a clunky computer, I haven’t done much blogging through a weekend in which I expected to do a lot of... Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Don’t mind me. I just couldn’t resist since several bloggers seem to think there is a similarity between this blog and a newspaper. I suppose that’s natural enough since I’ve written for newspapers, off and on, since I was sixteen. It was my part time newspaper gig that knocked me out of all the... Sign in to see full entry.

Self-promotion seems to work

At least it did for me yesterday. With tongue firmly inserted into cheek, I begged for a click on a post to “Blogging Naked.” It worked pretty well. Within short order I had a couple of clicks. Then, as I promised, I posted to the blog again. An added bonus has been some carryover into today for... Sign in to see full entry.

Will someone please click on this damned post:

Blogging Naked ….so I won’t feel like it was a total waste of effort? It’s been out there for 24 hours without a single hit. I absolutely refuse to blog naked or tell another joke until I get at least one click. While you’re at it, this one WRITERS WRITE has only had 1 hit in 24 hours. I thought it... My list of favorites is being overhauled.

It has to be weeded out because I’ve still got blogs on the list that have been inactive anywhere from months to years. Blogs inactive for a long time are just going to have to go. I need the space for people who are actually posting and commenting. It’s going to take a while to get my favorites... Sign in to see full entry.

Under the gun

It was my intention to post to at least four blogs before the system updated tonight. By my quick calculation I’ve got less than seven minutes left to get it done. The non-poet occasionally gets a quickie off. But usually not in this blog where he tries to cover a variety of topics. There are,... Sign in to see full entry.

Two phone calls today.

On my own phone. The new telephone company was as good as their word. This afternoon I had phone service in the old tin bucket for the first time in just over three years. Actually it might have been in operation since the A.M. I’ve got two borrowed telephones and had the nicer of the two hooked up.... Sign in to see full entry.

A good book is calling me.

I’m about two thirds of the way through an old Peter Straub novel, Mr. X, that is new to me. I probably won’t finish it tonight. But if I do, I’ve been wanting to read Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land again. The anticipation of a good read is almost as exciting as a child’s anticipation of... Sign in to see full entry.

Public breast feeding is legal in North Carolina.

I just heard that on a rebroadcast of last night’s eleven o’clock local news. I thought I’d pass it on for whatever it’s worth. Actually, if I heard correctly, North Carolina is one of only two states where public breast feeding, covered or uncovered, is legal. Somehow that doesn’t seem right. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Yesterday was almost a total loss.

And it started out so promising. It began with a cool and comfortable morning. It felt wonderful to be alive and able to take advantage of another beautiful day in a surprising string of spring-like days in the midst of summer. I should have known none of it, including my optimistic mood, would last... Sign in to see full entry.

I thought about taking the night off.

But since I’ve already missed two nights out of the previous four, I figured I better log in and post something just so y’all won’t forget about me. Missing the two nights shot my rankings all to hell. That doesn’t bother me since I’m not driven to be number one, or one hundred, or number six... Sign in to see full entry.

Neglected blogs

…are the main course again tonight. I’m almost back up to speed on following the continuing dominance of Poetry on Blogit. During my recent absence the category slipped a little. When I finally got around to checking I found that Poetry had slipped to just 27 blogs in the Top 100 over the last seven... Sign in to see full entry.

Ka-blooey!

Okay, let’s try this one more time. Last time I sat down to post I suddenly got big time queasy and called it quits before I even got started. The time before that my laptop tried to crash in the middle of my first cut and paste of a few prepared posts. By the time I got things working right again I... Sign in to see full entry.

Poetry slips

…all the way down to having just 31 out of the Top 100 over the last seven days. I know because I just went through and counted all of them a short while ago. Poetry had 32 blogs in the Top 100 yesterday. At that rate of decline Poetry will be down to zero by this time next month. Seriously, folks,... Sign in to see full entry.

32 Poetry blogs in this morning’s update

…of the Top 100 over the last seven days. That’s a lot of blogs at the top of the heap for a single category, folks. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I wouldn’t have caught it at all if I hadn’t been online when Blogit updated somewhere around 4:30 a.m. central North Carolina time. Although... Sign in to see full entry.

What is your favorite read?

Mine is science fiction, although I’ll read just about anything that has a good story and is well written enough that it doesn’t insult my intelligence. Good science fiction is more than just space opera and monstrous aliens. It encompasses speculation on future societies and technology, outer space... Sign in to see full entry.

The seventh and final Harry Potter book will shoot straight to #1

on all of the bestseller lists. The new Harry Potter movie (the fifth, I think) will rule at the box office for at least a week or two. None of this is surprising considering the massive worldwide popularity of each series and the publicity blitz that is generated by any new release. I’ve seen two... Sign in to see full entry.

“Gone With the Wind” is still the all time most popular movie.

At least that was my conclusion a few days ago when I was discussing movies with my son. Notice that I didn’t refer to it as the greatest motion picture of all time. Personally, I didn’t like it that much. But if ticket prices were adjusted for inflation, I concluded, it would easily out gross all... Sign in to see full entry.
