The point is, we never know it. I've been reading another book about England's Elizabeth I, this one by David Starkey, published in 2001. One of my previous favorites is Elizabeth Jenkins' ELIZABETH THE GREAT, published in 1958, which seems to have been the main source-book for Masterpiece Theater's ELIZABETH R.
