My spiritual immaturity shone brightly on a recent motorcycle ride. Standing outside a historic hotel in Williams after a break in riding, my three friends riding with me were preparing to mount their bikes again to head out when I came back from a quick tour of the hotel grounds. Finding “God” in today’s world is a complicated activity. Of course, it is complicated because we make it complicated. One way we make it complicated is by not living simple lives. To live a simple life means to live a life that is unencumbered by the trappings of materialism. It means living with only those things that one needs to survive. In Jomei’s blog today I read of the need to respect others. This is absolutely critical if we ever want access to the kingdom of “God”. Respect, compassion, love, charity, graciousness are all necessary aspects of the interactions we have with our brothers and sisters. It’s what the spiritual realm is all about. There is a statement I learned many years ago that has always stuck with me: “We are human beings, not human doings.” For me, this statement, though short on words, is long on meaning.
