Most armchair psychiatrists who talk about greed mention that this uncontrollable desire for material wealth is all about trying to fill the hole in one’s heart left from a loveless childhood or a lack of healthy self-love. And while that may be true, I don’t think that is the whole story. I think that at the base of one’s desire for material wealth is fear. Deep in our core, within our heart, we all know that divine light shines brightly within each of us. This divine light, this love, bubbles... Sign in to see full entry.

Ager - If We Get Angry, Then We Are Thinking Too Much About Ourselves
Anger is the most misunderstood of the seven deadly sins. Defined as a strong emotion that is oriented toward some real or supposed grievance, anger is a very selfish emotion. That’s right, it is selfish. And whether it is a real or suppposed grievance, anger is the ultimate illusion that we allow to be perpetrated against us. This is the misunderstanding. How so? Well, how do we usually hear the term “anger” used? In sentances like, “He makes me so angry,” or “She made me so angry,” usually.... Sign in to see full entry.

Lust Transfers Our Power to Create From Us to That Which We Crave
Fourth among the big seven deadly sins is lust. Lust is usually associated with strong, self-indulgent sexual desire and bodily pleasure. Notice that lust is a self-indulgent behavior? Right off the bat we see that it is “all about me”. If you’ve read my three previous blogs on the seven deadly sins, then you probably are seeing a pattern here. Each of these “sins” is the result of “missing the mark” when it comes to understanding our divinity. Each of these “sins” are actions that take us... Sign in to see full entry.

Gluttony - The Main Event in the United States of Amassing
The third deadly sin of the big seven is gluttony. While gluttony is defined as excessive overeating, which in and of itself is an activity that is “all about me”, I think it goes beyond that. At least in Western society, gluttony is an art form that inlcudes the vast materialism that is the United States of Amassing and the European Unity (let’s all buy everything we can together using the same money). As was the case for the first two deadly sins, gluttony again points to our “missing the... Sign in to see full entry.

Envy is Mistaking Short-Term Material Happiness for Real Happiness
Next on list the list of the seven deadly sins is Envy. Envy is the painful or resentful awareness of advantage enjoyed by another joined with the desire to possess the same advantage. When our light is dim, and we see the false light in another creating the illusion of happiness from material things, then we feel envious of that person. Oh to understand that our light is dim only because we have mistaken the short-lived happiness from material possessions as real happiness. Real happiness only... Sign in to see full entry.

Buying Into the Illusion of Me
We are all familiar with the seven deadly sins (Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed, and Sloth). And while the list is not found in the Bible, I believe these “sins” epitomize the concept of “missing the mark” and not “sharing in the prize”, the true meaning of the Greek word for sin, hamartano. Let’s look at sinful pride first. If I have too much pride, I’ve bought into the illusion of Me. I’ve decided that I am worth more than I truly am. I’ve directed all of my love toward myself rather... Sign in to see full entry.

Stories, Poetry and the Bible
I love storytelling. I love how a good storyteller can pull me completely into the world they have created, a world where symbols and images convey a moral message for me to learn. Poetry does a similar thing for me. Instead of conveying a message though, it conveys an experience, evoking emotion through imaginative word play, rhythm and sound. This is how I see the Bible as well. I don’t believe it to be the inerrant word of God. I see it as both a collection of stories and as poetic allegory.... Sign in to see full entry.

The Path to the Abyss is Thick With Lost Souls
Each morn we strive to awaken from the depths of ignorance. Each morn a fresh start arrives. We, the brotherhood of man, are without sin again. Tests search for each of us throughout the day. We have many opportunities to move closer to union with “God”, or to move closer to the abyss. Each time, the choice is ours. Each challenge presented is unique to our growth. One may be put in a position to help another. Another may be asked to return love to one who appears undeserving. Still another may... Sign in to see full entry.

Be Generous by Being Selfish
Generosity. When one hears the term, one immediately associates the word with an individual who is very giving – one who is magnanimous. And that certainly is true. Generosity is all about being very liberal in one's giving or sharing. But there is another aspect to generosity that often goes unnoticed, a very selfish aspect. One who is selfish with one’s character is ultimately a very giving person. One who models right behavior regardless of what might happen, who has high moral standards and...
