A Quiet Celebration

Today is a Holiday. So I don't have to go to work. The day does mean more than that to me, but even about that, I have mixed feelings. Campus is closed. I usually work in the tutorial room on Mondays, so I lose two hours of pay for the day. So the holiday costs me money. And I don't have a lot to do... Sign in to see full entry.

Small unquiet moments going to waste

I need a hobby. I find, now that the quarter has started, that I work in the morning, whether I have official duties before noon or not, and I linger at school after my lecture everyday, getting home around 3 pm, or a little later. At home in the evening, I sit in the living room watching 'The... Sign in to see full entry.

Mormon Secrets

The Mormons are building another Temple. I've lost count of how many they have in Salt Lake Valley (At lest 3), but NPR reported that this new one makes 129 worldwide. This one will be dedicated in March, and then no one but 'worthy' Mormons will be allowed inside. That counts me out. But I've been... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunny Childhood

I grew up in the Mojave Desert. Mostly, I loved it. Yucca are cool, lizards are cool, and unlike many people, I am not afraid of snakes. I've even caught rattlesnakes, which isn't hard once you know their limitations. Most of my desert experiences are just memories, some bad, mostly good, but I have... Sign in to see full entry.

A Brief History of Aptitude

The more I read about history, the more I think people should stay out of it. Or at least government. I read the recent piece by George Will about Congress and the Supreme Court looking at Aptitude Tests by employers. Talk about a mess. It seems there were lawsuits over certain tests, that some... I read today that Democratic Senators are coming out in opposition of the tax cuts President-elect Obama has proposed as part of his economic stimulus package. I wonder if they need a refresher course in economics. Now, I can understand that the priority for Senators is their own re-election, and... Sign in to see full entry.

Surrounded by reality

TV and blogging don't mix well. Actually, Blogging or writing don't mix with anything for me. It's hard enough to get thoughts out of my head without distractions. Tonight, I'm sitting in the living room with my wife's laptop and 'Bones' on. I wouldn't have even tried the laptop, but the show is a... Sign in to see full entry.

Conflicting Needs

I have, at times, found myself between a rock and a hard place. I don't deal well with that. I have certain propensities to want to make the people around me happy. I'm not an adult child of an alcoholic, but I think the urges are similar. I know something about that because my mother-in-law is an... Sign in to see full entry.

Family Matters

My daughter came home today for the first weekly dinner since she moved out on Friday. Yes, we have barely noticed she left, and already she's coming home for meals to avoid starvation. She also took the kitten. It's so boring here, we'll probably watch the Fiesta Bowl, even though I don't expect... Sign in to see full entry.

Adverse Reactions

I read an Opinion piece from some newspaper the other day about a woman who had canceled her Inauguration Day party because of President-elect Obama's choice of the Reverend Rick Warren to offer the invocation. Unsurprisingly, she was gay. Also unsurprisingly, she was in a committed relationship,... Sign in to see full entry.
