Remarkable Unhistory

Being of a curious nature, I ask a lot of questions, and sometimes even look for answers. Over the Christmas holiday, I looked up, again, the stories of the birth of Jesus, and was again struck by the inconsistencies in the Biblical accounts and the lack of historical documentation consistent with... Kittens, reruns, and hot tea. That's what we had for New Year's Eve. We watched 'The Holiday', that romantic comedy in which Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz trade houses for a month to get over bad relationships, then an old episode of 'Bones'. I had a beer. My wife had a cup of tea. Zelda, our... Sign in to see full entry.

Endings

According to the calendar, a year is ending tonight. Personally, I'd prefer a calendar based on astronomical event, putting the end of the new year at a solstice or equinox. January's beginning seems arbitrary, but that isn't really an issue of any importance, just something that occurs to me every... Sign in to see full entry.

Law and Order

I work now and then as a gallery guard at an art museum. I started the job of a suggestion from my wife, who is the Registrar for the Permanent Collection of the museum. I was, at the time, unemployed, so any income was better than nothing. For a time, I worked there almost full time, but now I am a... Sign in to see full entry.

Conserving Energy

They talked me into working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. (I had to explain Boxing Day to at least half a dozen people yesterday. They had never heard of it. I've never been to Great Britain, and I've been in Canada once, but I've known about Boxing Day since I was a child. Not sure where I picked... Sign in to see full entry.

My daughter wants to move out and get her own place. She called a landlord yesterday about a house with rooms for rent. I went with her to look it over, and I have to say, it was pretty nice for a student apartment, especially for the price. A sort of silver lining of the housing crisis, I suppose.... Heroes

My son brought home a couple of DVD's from the library. The first few episodes of a TV show called 'Heroes'. I've heard of the show, and had seen an episode or two. It is a drama with lots of characters that live in different places, and only occasionally interact, and it is a kind of science... Sign in to see full entry.

Old Free Speech

I read an essay by Mark Twain in the latest issue of the New Yorker. It had never been published before. Twain says free speech, whenever committed, is always punished. He calls it the privilege of the grave. He could be right, I don't know. Even in the modern world of anonymous blogging, we often... Sign in to see full entry.

Fatigue

I'm tired. It's a gray, rainy day here, and I have nowhere to go and nothing I need to do, and I really just want to curl up under a flannel quilt and read until I drift back to sleep. That's what I did yesterday, too. I haven't written here for two weeks, and I've almost stopped thinking about... Sign in to see full entry.

Court Authority

I like guns. I own one, though it sits somewhere in my parents' house. It's a 22 rifle, and I got it when I was 12. I don't think I've fired a gun in nearly twenty years. But I grew up n the West, and everyone had a gun. We'd go outside town, and shoot targets against the side of a hill, just for... Sign in to see full entry.
