Light Reading

Having an active mind, and a more or less inactive body, and inactive social life, I have lots of time to think about things, and review the past. So after rewatching 'Becoming Jane', I remembered, again, that I had never read, 'Tom Jones', a book referenced in 'Becoming Jane', and other places.... Sign in to see full entry.

Super Sunday

I was thinking of watching the Super Bowl today. American football is about my seventh favorite sport, behind crew and politics, but I can enjoy a game, and I'm always up for an excuse to have another white wine. (Or isn't that what people drink during the big game? I've never been quite in the main... Sign in to see full entry.

Feeling Uneasy

Eight hundred billion dollars is a lot of money. Seven hundred billion, the amount thrown into the financial crisis, was a lot of money, and this Recovery Act bill is bigger than that. I've read some about economics, even the mysterious macroeconomics, and think I can follow much of what is said... Sign in to see full entry.

The Governor and Education

Ten years ago, or so, the state Supreme Court in Ohio declared that the system for funding education in the state was in violation of the constitution. After that, year after year, the legislature would debate education funding, make a few little changes, and go back to court. The court would... Sign in to see full entry.

Celebrations

In other education news in Central Ohio, there is a small controversy in Whitehall. A science teacher there wanted to recognize Charles Darwin's 200th birthday, 12 February. Lots of people the world over are talking about Darwin and his Bicentennial Anniversary. His work has had tremendous... Sign in to see full entry.

Blackmail

When I was in college, school funding was tight in Utah. One high school found a way to get interest up, and draw crowds at meetings. They canceled sports. Yeah, threatening to increase class size, cut back on things like music and art, field trips, and maybe even books and supplies got empty rooms... Sign in to see full entry.

I am a man of some education. Also an educator, from a family of educators. My dad taught high school, my sister teaches elementary school. I have aunts and uncles that were teachers and principals going back as far as my knowledge of their careers. So I think about schools and what should be done... Sign in to see full entry.

A New Name

I changed the name of my blog. I kind of liked the old name, but I have to admit I wasn't comfortable with the whole 'God-damned' thing. I was raised in a strict home, and taking the Lord's name in vain was not tolerated. Even since I left off believing in God, I have avoided use of the name. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Return to Normalcy

It was almost a normal week. Except a new president took over Washington, something that won't affect me all that much, though I did notice it, and my son was there. He was excited about seeing the inauguration, even from a distance, though he didn't vote for Obama, but he reported on his adventure,... Sign in to see full entry.

I had a chardonnay with dinner. And I grilled burgers over charcoal in the back yard. The cold didn't bother me. Or rather, I enjoyed defying nature and surviving the cold. I didn't even put on a coat, just wore my sweater. The meal was in celebration of President Obama's inauguration, but had... Sign in to see full entry.
