ARIEL

You will not see any new material on my blogs very soon; indeed, I have been so disillusioned with Blogit that I have posted nothing since last June. My subscription to Blogit expires this month, and I shall not renew it, for various reasons, some of which I cite below. I was wavering as to should I continue with Blogit or not, but the outrageous expulsion of.Dave, on the most specious of excuses, and the subsequent nauseating wriggling, and the breathtaking arrogance of the Blogit staff has... FIESTA! AND SOME ZARZUELA

See, depsite the tales to the contrary I'm not a) dead, b) abducted by aliens or c) swanninjg around a desert island with the gal in my last post. ( Was it?) We’ve just returned home from the fiesta in our local village; that of course was after hearing the music pounding away until 6am this morning. Not that one would notice, because everyone – and I mean everyone - seemed full of beans when we got there at about noon: just dunno how they do it! Or, cunning this! maybe they have doppelgangers... RUMOURS OF MY DEMISE HAVE BEEN GROSSLY OVERBLOWN ; PROBABLY BY ALIENS

Ariel still has his beady eyes fixed on you lot, you know! And to prove that he isn't some disembodied presence... INTRIGUING FEMALE IMAGES # ONE DAMNED MARKET RESEARCH GALS! Once they get a foot in the door ….! Okay, let’s get serious here … One may log on to numerous sites, where one can sample all sorts of pretentious garbage – and of course some good, reasoned critiques of this picture – but me? I’m just a layman who knows what he likes. And have very definite ideas about feminine beauty,... Sign in to see full entry.

AN EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN SEVILLE : PART FIVE

As we drifted up the Guadalquivir, I in my dream-like state, musing on the history of Spain, and Seville in particular, on one level of consciousness, I was aware of, and admired one of the bridges over the river. It was inspired by the Iron Bridge over the river Severn in Shropshire, England, having similar thick steel rings of varying diameter supporting the span. The Iron Bridge was the first bridge in the world to be built of cast iron, and was not only a marvellous feat of engineering in... Sign in to see full entry.

AN EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN SEVILLE : PART FOUR

Keywords. Now, there are three things, apart from the obvious historical buildings etc that are de rigeur for any visitor to Seville: a tour of the city in one of the numerous horse-drawn carriages; a longer tour on an open-topped bus, or a cruise along the Guadalquivir river.* The bus tour’s very good, because armed with an all-day ticket, one can jump off, and get back on four times during the day. but we chose the river trip for our first day’s adventure … The boat cruises down the river,... AN EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN SEVILLE : PART THREE

Once one leaves the mountainous area of Granada Province, the landscape becomes seriously boring; a vast undulating plain, with only an occasional low peak breaking the hazy skyline. The cereals, and other crops have been harvested, and all around are wide expanses of bare, tilled earth – and of course, the myriad olive trees, marching with military precision over the land. The fields of un-harvested sunflowers present an oddly moving sight: row upon row of stiff stalks with sad looking, dark... Sign in to see full entry.

AN EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN SEVILLE : PART TWO

Foreword: Hot damn! I’ve lost a bit of this, so I shall have to pick up as best I can, by stitching bits from later parts together. So please bear with me if thing look a bit disjointed at the beginning. What I forgot to tell you yesterday was how cheap train fare are here in Andalucia. With our 40% discount for being a pair of wrinklies, our fares came to the staggering sum of €20! ( $25.60 or £13.50 ) From Loja to Seville, with two short stops is a two and a half hour journey. Two return trips... Sign in to see full entry.

LADY ARIELA AND ARIEL'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN SEVILLE. A repost. part 1.

These events occurred last year. The author wishes it to be clear that any similarity to any living person is entirely coincidental.LOL There was a palpable air of anticipation and excitement as Lady Ariela and I rose from our bed for our trip to Seville, at ten minutes to the crack of dawn. Much to do; the final bits of packing etc, and the dogs. Now, it must not be assumed that our departure would necessarily be a sedate affair, because of Quigley and Harry, our two dogs. They wander free... Sign in to see full entry.

A NEW FOLKLORE : PART FIVE

The storm trooper wing of the feminist movement behave more like crude and licentious soldiery than cultured and civilized women. It never seems to occur to them that their eager adoption of the worst characteristics of males robs their arguments of all force. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then what is one to think of females who so enthusiastically adopt the manners of those whom they purport to deride? Or are they so insecure in their own female personalities that they must... Sign in to see full entry.

A NEW FOLKLORE : PART FOUR

It is not the majority of men who are loving partners and fathers, but the few who are violent and abusive who have become the archetypical male: such behaviour not an aberration but the norm of male conduct. Somewhere along the dark and twisted path to these beliefs tolerance and understanding; feminine compassion and gentleness have been lost. To a depressingly large number of women, men have become some form of loathsome vermin, fit only to be the butt of spiteful jokes and propaganda.. In a... Sign in to see full entry.

A NEW FOLKLORE : PART THREE

Two widely propagated, and generally believed bits of folklore: or, more accurately dogma, are that men are some cloddish species of creature, capable of being only approximately human by “ Getting in touch with their feminine side ” or some such nonsensical and meaningless mantra. Obviously, some attributes are more pronounced in females than in males, but tenderness and compassion; the capacity to show love and affection to others, are human, not exclusively female traits - evolved to ensure... A NEW FOLKLORE : PART TWO

All manner of – mostly meaningless – psychobabble is conjured up, out of thin air it seems, to ‘ prove ’ the most absurd, outrageously generalised perceptions of males: most appropriately called the “ all men are …” syndrome. It is as if all men, everywhere, are mere slaves to their brute shared biology, which renders them incapable of feeling or acting certain ways. Nice, feminine ways of course. Well, hell, I guess we can be charitable here and exempt gays from our strictures, ‘cos of course,... Sign in to see full entry.

A VIGNETTE OF SPANISH LIFE ... AND DEATH

I still have some editing to do on my A New Folklore piece, so meanwhile try this … The Spanish Way of Death. The more affluent modern societies become; and the more its members become obsessed with their own health and beauty, the more they seem to look upon death as an infliction of a cruel and uncaring God or Nature. But the Spanish seem to me to have a more natural acceptance of death than do we present-day British; although in my youth our attitudes to death were very similar to theirs.... A NEW FOLKLORE ; PART ONE

I was a feminist ( yes, a man can be a feminist!) long before the term was even invented. Amy Johnson and Amelia Erhardt enjoyed as honoured a place in the pantheon of my boyhood heroes as the Wright brothers or Charles Lindbergh. And as for Lady Hester Stanhope, who wandered alone throughout Turkish-ruled Arabia in the early 19 th century! What a role model for any boy, let alone a girl! And then, there were all those heroic women performing amazing feats of bravery and fortitude during World... Sign in to see full entry.

AT LAST! A MYSTERY EVEN MORE PROFOUND THAN e=mc2 SOLVED!!!

A small request: as you read this please can we have no unseemly sniggering, tittering, or other manifestation of mirth unbecoming to a family blog. Please bear in mind that this article is about a serious piece of forensic archaeology, and as such is no laughing matter. At long, long last, the suspense is ended! The riddle is solved! One can hear the world-wide collective sighs of relief. Gentlemen in the West End clubs are mopping their streaming brows, and snapping their fingers at Hodge, the... Sign in to see full entry.

A HEALTHY DIET : PART TWO

To read the diaries of Parson Woodforde, of Norfolk, is to gain the impression of a gormandising hog, gorging and swilling his way to an early grave, but in fact he had a long, fulfilling life, and in this he was in no way untypical of the age in which he lived, and his daily diet was typical of people on his income: £400 per annum. It is interesting – and is an indication of how little bread was eaten at his Rectory – to note that Woodforde’s bill for flour in 1790 was £5 7s 6d, while for the... Sign in to see full entry.

A HEALTHY DIET : a repost.

In recent decades, dietary science seems to have degenerated into an endless quest for ever more substances in the human diet which can be said to cause some disease or other. There is now hardly any food which is ‘safe ’ to eat, and fats and sugar are looked upon by the credulous as highly toxic substances: roughly on a par with dioxin, or plutonium. Or even Polonium 110 And hardly a week passes that something that was formerly held to be good for you is now found to be bad for you: and vice... Sign in to see full entry.

GUARDIAN ANGELS : PART THREE

What I posted yesterday is by no means a complete list of the truly righteous Gentiles, whose humanity and compassion for their fellows shine like a beacon in a still wicked world, and whose names should not be permitted to lapse into obscurity. There were others – many others – who reached out to the Jews while others turned their faces from their oppression, becoming thereby complicit in their ultimate mass slaughter. Almost all those listed in my last post, and others, performed their... Sign in to see full entry.

GUARDIAN AGELS : PART TWO

These are just some of the extraordinarily varied group of people, working usually in isolation from each other, who acted as guardian angels to the Jews, during the Nazi period. As you will see, some of them paid a high price for their compassion, and therefore deserve the more honour. Is not shameful that these people ( apart that is from Raoul Wallenberg ) are virtually unknown in our ‘democracies ’? We should see memorials to them in every country, besides Israel; even honour them on a... Sign in to see full entry.

GUARDIAN ANGELS

In my series of posts in my Fiction blog about a single event in the Holocaust that occurred in a village in the Volhinia in 1944, was shown the sheer bestiality of the Nazis. There in the remote, sparsely populated backwoods of Poland and Russia – whose own populations were violently anti-Semitic – the septic violence of the Nazis and their minions of other races festered openly. Harrowing as it is in its detailing of one massacre of Jews, my story is positively benign in comparison with some... Sign in to see full entry.
