To read the diaries of Parson Woodforde, of Norfolk, is to gain the impression of a gormandising hog, gorging and swilling his way to an early grave, but in fact he had a long, fulfilling life, and in this he was in no way untypical of the age in which he lived, and his daily diet was typical of people on his income: £400 per annum.
