I sent out email reminders on Wed that Thurs was the deadline for members to get their 5 pages out to everyone. The Write Group meets this Thurs. I sent my bit in the email -- that bit of fiction I posted here on Blogit a couple days back about the little sleeper spy girl. Friday I got an email from... Sign in to see full entry.

Not to beat a dead horse, but
Louise Erdrich was interviewed on Bill Moyers' Journal on PBS last night. The book I talked about yesterday is already more than 10 years old, but she's got a new one out that sounds even more intrigueing -- it's called Shadow Tag. Remember when you were a kid and the game was to step on the other... Sign in to see full entry.

Tales of Burning Love -- by Louise Erdrich
This book, by one of my favorite writers, was a bargain I picked up off the shelves at Carnegie's, the little bookstore/coffee shop at the library. It was published by HarperCollins in 1996 -- how could I have missed this one? Surprisingly enough, it's really about fire -- and the five former wives... Sign in to see full entry.
Letter from a friend
Jean called me yesterday after she walked down to the mail box and picked up her mail. There was a letter from June, she said. It was beautifully written, her handwriting is like mine was when I was in school, perfectly drawn and clear. Nothing like the handwriting of a woman of 92. Jean read it to... A moment of silence for Wilma Mankiller
They announced yesterday on NPR that Wilma Mankiller, age 64, passed away two days ago after losing her battle with cancer. Ms. Mankiller had served for ten years as tribal chief of the Cherokee Nation, its first ever female chief. She was also a mother, one who worked for the betterment of all... January Moon
Her name is January Moon Diaz. She came to the U.S. from Cuba at the age of thirteen. She was one of many refugees from a flotilla of small boats, oil-drum rafts and truck inner-tubes. By some miracle, they landed safely on Key West after a precarious 90 miles on the open sea. She goes by “Jan”... Sign in to see full entry.

My get up and go has got up and went
I'm feeling very unnecessary today. Tired. Tired of it all. I just want to curl up in a ball and sleep. My legs feel heavy. My eyelids, too. Remember that silly thing we learned in school? "Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I'm gonna go eat worms. Long slim slimy ones, short fat fuzzy ones, itsy... Sign in to see full entry.

Wearing His Clothes...
It was the thing at MHS, when a girl was dating a jock, she wore his letterman's sweater while he was out there scoring touchdowns or shooting baskets in the big game. There are scenes in movies where a woman in love puts on her husband's shirt when he's at work, or in one stock bit of drama, he's a... Sign in to see full entry.

Kriege Hatchery
When I first moved to Mundane in 1966 it was a different town. About 12,000 people, typical prairie look to it. You see the same water tower, the same storefronts, the same main street intersection with its stop light all over the Midwest. There was the courthouse square, a tavern across the street... Yard waste
Few days ago I was doing some cleanup in the yard when the guy next door comes over. He's not really the guy next door, but he's been there off and on for a few days helping the new little neighbor clean up and settle in. Mike, he said his name is. He said he painted the basement floor, fixed up one... Sign in to see full entry.
