I’ve grown addicted to the stories inherent in Spider Solitaire, how the black queen flirts with the red king knowing full well there’s no future for them. How ambitious jacks of hearts and spades feign interest in queens of opposite shades and hope to raise their ante through intrigue perhaps... Sign in to see full entry.
It's a new day. Happy Monday!
Yesterday was well spent. I went to a "quicknic" lunch with my son and his girlfriend, his daughters, and my great grands. Little Maddie (3) was in a talkative mood, and 18-month old Buster was his usual hungry self, in a hurry and saying "me, me, me" when his mom didn't get the bites to him quite... The weather's great,
But I'm so tired. Exhausted. For some reason I ain't enjoying these lovely days, have no ambition and there are so many things I need to get at. I think about the garage: converting it to an arts/crafts studio. But that's all I can bring myself to do, think about it. Every job seems too complicated.... Sign in to see full entry.

From the poet's file:
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOLLYHOCKS In my back yard on Hale Avenue, red hollyhocks grew bright: tall stems against the back fence, stacks of happy blooms one above the other, hello yellow centers smiling and nodding. Before I left the house on Hale Avenue I grabbed seed pods fat fuzzy coins that held the... Sign in to see full entry.

Incident in a writer's life
The note was written on lined notebook paper, the page carefully trimmed to leave half an inch on both sides, and an inch above and below, then folded neatly and tucked into an envelope that is beginning to darken with age. Waste not, want not. I found it waiting for me when I went to the Library to... Sign in to see full entry.

"In spring the young man's fancy
lightly turns to thoughts of what the girls have been thinking about all winter." This was the stock opening line of our high school principal's remarks in the school's annual spring assembly. Laurence (Squeekin) Deacon was a fixture at MHS for more than 40 years, and as fine a man as ever held that... Sign in to see full entry.

What is love?
One answer: We are conjured voiceless out of nothing and must return to an unknowing state. What happens in between is an uncontrolled dance, and what we ask for in love is no more than a momentary chance to get the steps right, to move in harmony until the music stops. Louis Erdrich, from Tales of... Sign in to see full entry.
Houston, we have a problem.
I sent out email reminders on Wed that Thurs was the deadline for members to get their 5 pages out to everyone. The Write Group meets this Thurs. I sent my bit in the email -- that bit of fiction I posted here on Blogit a couple days back about the little sleeper spy girl. Friday I got an email from... Sign in to see full entry.

Not to beat a dead horse, but
Louise Erdrich was interviewed on Bill Moyers' Journal on PBS last night. The book I talked about yesterday is already more than 10 years old, but she's got a new one out that sounds even more intrigueing -- it's called Shadow Tag. Remember when you were a kid and the game was to step on the other... Sign in to see full entry.

Tales of Burning Love -- by Louise Erdrich
This book, by one of my favorite writers, was a bargain I picked up off the shelves at Carnegie's, the little bookstore/coffee shop at the library. It was published by HarperCollins in 1996 -- how could I have missed this one? Surprisingly enough, it's really about fire -- and the five former wives... Sign in to see full entry.
