It's Friday. Sun's out! Big moon last night.

I've been doing dreary editing of poetry written over the past few years. Putting them all in the same font, using the same format for titles. Most of this is grub work, taking mental tweezers to unnecessary commas, sucking out "the" and "and" to tighten the sense and enhance meaning. There are 50... Sign in to see full entry.

Caffe Avanti...

It's the name of a new restaurant in the neighborhood. They tell me it's Italian loosely translated and means "coffee first." Luscious baked goods, brownies as big as your hand, cookies the size of a salad plate. No, I didn't have one. Those are the kind you share. Your sweetheart and you get a... Sign in to see full entry.

Petty complaint about a big *!#ing deal...

The big deal is the Olympics. On NBC. Which re-scheduled my Soap "Days of Our Lives" to four a.m. Four a.m.! Who gets up at 0400 to watch ANYTHING, let alone a soap? Well, night before last I was having one of those nights, and in a groggy, half dozing state, turned on the boob tube hoping it would... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm a bit sore and achy this morning.

Ultrasound and extra tight mammogram trays for the follow-up exam yesterday. I had the original exam last Wed., and the doctor who reads the x-rays wanted a second look at Lefty. So there I was, on time and cooperative, and the little technician -- Jessica -- was apologetic as she moved the... Sign in to see full entry.

Down to business...

That burst of speed I enjoyed last fall when writing was my be-all, end-all and the story of the broken disco ball just poured onto the page was a wonderful celebration of writing-hood. but now I'm more in a business mood. I went to Poets & Writers magazine, to the Deadlines section and pulled 5... Sign in to see full entry.

Writers Group

Only four of us showed up Thurs. night and one was the new member, Lynn. It was her intro meeting, so she wasn't supposed to send any pages. She got mine -- it was attached to the group email, but the others didn't notice it. Anyway a copy was passed around and they talked about it -- It was the... Sign in to see full entry.

Warm Sands

What’s needed is a warm night with stars that float mellow in the sky, sand beneath bare feet: warm dry, yielding slightly underfoot. Enough of drifting shifts of snow slithering before chilled winds. Enough of the chewing constant cold that recalls another blizzard season when necessities were an... Sign in to see full entry.

On Convict Labor -- News Article from 120 Years Ago

CONVICT LABOR [MUNDANE,] ILL. -- Wed., July 9, 1890: The convict labor question in Illinois is about to assume a new phase. The amendment to the constitution adopted three years ago prohibiting the employment of prison labor in any pursuit in which it might come into competition with other labor was... You can tell a lot about a town by its kids' behavior...

A couple came into my little bookshop, ordered coffee and sat looking at a map of Mundane. They were looking to buy a house here. She'd been a school bus driver in their present town, Milton, a few miles west of here, and several years ago here in Mundane. "You can tell a lot about a town by the way... Roofs, snowdrifts, birthdays...

Jean called Sunday. She'd been at the library to chat with me and June, but I was busy with patron questions and selling coffee. One good thing about this weather, it boosts the sales of warm cups of flavor. I asked her if the roofers had done their thing. "No. And not only that, they've left this...
