Sunrise glory

The sunrise may have been fabulous this morning. It's not yet 70 here in beautiful downtown Mundane, birds are quiet, the grass is emerald green thanks to the frequent heavy rainstorms we've had all summer, and the humidity is down. So the word for the day is refreshing. But I didn't see Old Sol... Sign in to see full entry.

Odd light...

I was just outside, in a morning oddly lit. A couple hours ago there was a brief mild thunderstorm, a bit of rain, and as sunrise approached more clouds coasted in from the north. Instead of turning low-hanging clouds along the eastern horizon to flame, the sun caught these low clouds and lit them.... Sign in to see full entry.

My daughter's come to visit this week

Up from Florida, visiting her mom -- and her dad later today -- before she has to get back to campus in a couple or three weeks. So don't expect much in the way of new from me. Spent some time last night looking through the photo album, she said you always had a kid on your hip, did you know there... Sign in to see full entry.

How many writers does it take to make a festival?

At our library, they put out the invitation, through the papers, word of mouth and on the website. They were hoping for three, maybe five. We got twenty-six: mainline published, self-published, some with several books to show. From within a 40-mile radius they came, each carrying a dozen or so books... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday, June 11, 1895: Excursions to the Country

June 11, 1895 CITY COUSINS CALL ________ Visit Leclaire and Fill Their Lungs With Fresh Country Air ________ This city of beautiful shade trees and balmy breezes was sought by two parties of excursionists from St. Louis since Friday. Like others in large cities they had been cooped up and forced to... Sign in to see full entry.

Profit Sharing, Circa 1894

I found this article among those to be added to the Leclaire Historic Neighborhood website. Mr. N. O. Nelson, who founded a bathtub and plumbing components factory about 30 miles east of St. Louis in the late 1890s, was a proponent of profit sharing with employees: April 14, 1894 -- New York Times... A 70-year-old protagonist? Tell me more.

I'm reading a story now, sort of against my better judgement. It's called "Visitors" by Anita Brookner, who's published 17 novels and is -- or was -- a Slade professor at Cambridge University and lives in London. Not that I can really appreciate what a Slade professorship entails. But I'm assuming... Sign in to see full entry.

Ah, you thought Chris was...

Well, he is a cute guy. In fact, about 4 years ago, he's the guy at the company formerly known as Datajacks, who actually built my computer. He's one of those handy guys who knows his way around a circuit board. And he's a year younger than my own baby boy. If he were single and I were 30-something... Sign in to see full entry.

Chris just fixed my internet connection.

Changed out the card in the computer, reconnected the ethernet cable, got the IP address functioning again, and then, as he plugged everything back together, he had to reconfigure the Microsoft program. It does things to keep you from copying the software from one computer to another. Consarn you... Sign in to see full entry.

The Farm revealed in "Inside Out," a new book

You know the Farm isn't where butter and eggs come from. If you read spy novels you know it is shorthand for the CIA's top secret training facility. An operator isn't a guy who's smooth with the ladies, nor is an operation exclusively what a surgeon does. A black op is a clandestine project,... Sign in to see full entry.
