Langston Hughes writes stories: beautifully crafted, enduring, triumph-over-adversity stories. He writes about making do or doing without, about how the life of the mind can carry the heart through rough inconsiderations, trials by fire, terrorism. Sometimes I can not keep reading because the sharp... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunshine...
There's a commercial out now, I think it's a car commercial, that uses the old song "You are my sunshine" to get the viewer's attention. It's a grabber. We used to sing that song on Saturday afternoon drives when the boys were little, in the days before seat belts and carseats for kids under 40... Sign in to see full entry.

Odd programming on HLN
How much speculation, how many woulda-coulda-shoulda suggestions can you swallow in a week? If you've a low tolerance, then stay offa HLN and don't even peek in at Nancy Grace. I caught a couple minutes of Nancy Grace last night. It's all I could stand. She was practically jumping out of her chair,... Sign in to see full entry.

Parabola
Years ago, perhaps when I was an English major browsing the campus bookstore, perhaps it was assigned by a creative writing prof -- I discovered a publication called Parabola. Subtitled "where spiritual traditions meet," it is a magazine style collection of philosophy, science, art and religion. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Rainy days and Mondays...
I love Mondays! When I tell people that they arch an eyebrow and say nothing, or come up with a surprised comment to the effect that I am one sick puppy. What happens on Monday that makes me happy? Work. The Job. A sense of purpose, a chance to earn, a change of scene from the house. When I was in... Sign in to see full entry.

My older daughter friended me on Facebook...
She hasn't been there lately. Or "forever." She's a speech pathologist, rehab specialist at a nursing/rehab facility in Decatur, so she doesn't get down this way very often. Her profile picture is the one I like best, fairly recent and smiling, and I posted a comment that it was my favorite. L... Sign in to see full entry.

Lay, lie, laid...
Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas. Hens lay, people lie. Double check the easy words -- there's a big difference between site and sight. (Nora Baker, JRN 251). One goose, two geese, baby goslings. The past tense of shut is shut. The past tense of lay is laid. Think about it. Sign in to see full entry.

In the Nick of time...
Dropped by yesterday to talk to my granddaughter. I had planned to talk her into going up to our local health food shop and buy her a sandwich at the lunch counter, go through the vegetarian publications they have there. Green Earth Grocery has a freezer full of Tofu treats, Not-Meat frozen stuff,... Sign in to see full entry.

Nutrition vs self-destruction
Processed foods are so tempting: potato chips, chocolate, fizzy syrupy drinks, pizza. We have that craving for sweets and fats, even though we know we could get along "forever" without a Hershey bar or a Pepsi. Yesterday came a problem. It seems this 16-year-old Granddaughter who's otherwise... Sign in to see full entry.

I love my country.
But I'm falling out of love with the politicians. Double-talking, word spinning, money-snatchers, all. They dance on the line, step over at times, caught by their own twitter photos in the act of being less than. If that's the worst they did, we'd all have jobs, pay fair taxes, find equal protection... Sign in to see full entry.
