And he's recovering slowly from the stroke. Nephew Larry reports his dad is sleeping a lot and acting strange. Decisions are pending, they don't need me there. Local Stuff Last night Jean called -- I jumped when the phone rang. After a minute or two on another subject she said I know you said you... Sign in to see full entry.

The call -- the email
You know the one. Phone rings and you know it's horrible news even before you pick up. Got a call like that in '03, my daughter. Her husband had died. Sitting on the edge of the bed and just slumped over. He'd been fighting a vicodin addiction, trying to get off the pain pills. Pain from a neck... Sign in to see full entry.

Tender Mercies
I remember the movie from more than a few years back. I see the faces of the actors, a woman named Tess Harper, the leading man is Robert Duvall, a fine actor with many roles under his belt. In the movie he plays a used up old country singer, a long-time drunk who's lost and drifting. She plays a... Sign in to see full entry.

Straight? Flush? or aces and eights...
In old time western movies there's often a poker game. Body language among the cowboys tells who's got a winning hand, who came up with aces and eights. Dead man's hand, aces and eights. I think it was Buffalo Bill holding that hand when some drunken cowboy looking to take a bite out of his fame... Sign in to see full entry.

Sleep on it...
There are scientists now who advise, when you've got a problem chasing itself around and around in your mind, to sleep on it. Can't decide an issue? Stalled at the fork of a choice where either path you take may be scary? Sleep on it. Apparently your subconscious computer of a mind will chew and... Sign in to see full entry.

Cormac McCarthy...
The first book I read by this author was No Country For Old Men. To say it depressed me would be an understatement. At the end I wanted to throw it at the wall or burn it. But it got a lot of wonderful reviews -- the Coen Brothers even made an academy-award winning movie of it. So you can discount... Sign in to see full entry.
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child...
I found this one in a poetry collection I'd submitted to a publisher a year or so ago. Come to think of it, I've never heard from them since. I wonder if they actually rejected it, or if they simply took my entry fee and blew it on lattes.... How, Orphan? To be without kin is to be outcast in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Chit Chat and motivation
I got a phone call from June yesterday. Unusual. She almost never calls me. She's on her son's cell phone service and has a Texas area code. She thinks it will cost me for long distance if I have to call back. She was just talking to Jean, she said. They want to get together for coffee and a chat on... Sign in to see full entry.

There be dragons...
Naut spoke of that white area on his "map" where he does not venture in his comment about DWT yesterday. His comment got me thinking, my thoughts branching and circling like vines around a tree. First of all, it seems to me we all have places like that, things that simply bore us to death. Sometimes... Sign in to see full entry.

DWT has got me -- although I hate to admit it
Can't help it. I caught myself clicking on Dancing With the Stars for the results show despite my determination not to waste time on such pointless fluff. I don't vote. But I identify with Kirstie Alley -- who started out the least likely to make it through a single routine, let alone give the... Sign in to see full entry.
