Another Center-fold

Sorry, terrible pun. Stories from The Center are anything but a fold-out like those in the old Playboy magazines. Now, I’m wondering if they’re still in business. Seem to remember they quit using nude shots in their pages, Hef sold the mansion, and our country has grown up to the point our young... Sign in to see full entry.

Clarification ???

Who is snottie Annie? Snaggletooth and Snotty Annie

It was a mixed up day at The Center, what with the changy weather and our numbers thinned by the Grim Reaper in the past few weeks. Our man Ken, who handled the nickels and dimes for the bingo cards and door-prize chances, went to his reward a couple weeks ago, and I miss seeing him dozing in his... Sign in to see full entry.

Great Again?

I walk barefoot on rough gravel; the cold has numbed the soles of my feet, I no longer feel sharp stones nor pay attention to the red ooze tracing my steps. The road from misery to possibility goes on forever. There are no printed signs, just distant gaps in the mountains, beckoning. When I get... Sign in to see full entry.

Finally!

A year or so ago I signed a contract with Page Publishing Inc. of New York City to manage the printing & distribution of my novel “Bloody Hell and a Slice of Pie.” As my Blogit friends know, it is a biographical novel based on the life of my parents. Each month I sent Page a check for $295 – until... Sign in to see full entry.

In the era of Trump's misbegotten reign

Sometimes I watch the moon and stars and dream of raising dust on mars or floating out there all serene from earth through all the in-between. Sign in to see full entry.

Why We Write

Caves are lined with the picto-stories of ancient humans. Cowboys swapped lies around the campfire as their herd settled in for the night. Even now we watch the stars, wonder what it would feel like to kick up some dust on Mars. We gossip, or sit, remote in hand, in front of the TV. We love stories.... Sign in to see full entry.

Groundhog Day

So, it’s the 2nd of February and we’re waiting for sunrise to see whether Punxatawney Phil is going to see his groundhog shadow to signal whether there will be six more weeks of winter. Or, as I remember it “Groundhog Day” is a movie in which poor old Bill Murray is forced to relive the same day... Sign in to see full entry.

An unforgettable lunch.

By Rusty Hughes Thin cream of mushroom soup for the first course, watery salad for the second – dinner rolls with lunchroom butter pats. Cabbage rolls. Light cheesecake for dessert. Beverly Hills, California – early May 1995. Wearing a new (cheap) suit and new shoes, I felt a little conspicuous... Sign in to see full entry.

Special treat coming to this page...

My son Russ is a gifted writer. From time to time he posts to Facebook a true encounter he's had with people he meets on the job. He is a commercial-industrial real estate appraiser, and for 20 years or so his focus has been on nursing homes and other health care facilities. Yesterday he posted a... Sign in to see full entry.
