Mrs. Newton and lesser teachers at dear old MHS said Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” was worse than all the rest. “Cliché,” she said, “and mundane crap at its very best.” Which put most of the class in defensive mode, We thought her opinion was a “load.” “I think that I shall never see / a poem lovely as a... Itty Bitty Mystery Solved
Three or four weeks ago I thought I heard a faint knock on my door. I was bopping around the house in my PJ’s – a ratty old gray sweat- shirt and my pink fuzzy bathrobe. I took a second to tie the belt and went to the door, feeling a bit embarrassed to still be in night gear at nine a.m. Nobody was... Sign in to see full entry.

PAT’S HATS, HANDMADE CREATIONS
Did I mention that a surprise package arrived in my mailbox a couple weeks ago? It was a bundle of tiny fabric labels – the kind that manufacturers sew into garments. I love the fact that some tee-shirt makers have gotten rid of these labels and taken to printing their name inside the necklines of... Sign in to see full entry.

Mashed Potato Candy – the result
We gathered Friday evening for supper at Chava’s, a popular Mexican restaurant around the corner from St. B’s – walked over from the house as darkness began to fall. There were seven of us including son Rich’s new girlfriend and son Russ’s stepdaughter, my chosen granddaughter. The new girlfriend is... Sign in to see full entry.

Mashed Potato Candy
We bought a prepared dinner from the supermarket for our Thanksgiving gathering. Rusty ordered it, a 12 pound Butterball pre-cooked, mashed potatoes, dressing, green-bean casserole, and mixed veggies. All go into the oven to warm up, 140 degrees internal temp. for the turkey. There were also rolls... Sign in to see full entry.

TWITTERPATED ON TURKEY DAY
So I went out onto the front porch to look at the morning here on historic brick street, calm, sunshine coming over the roofline, not a soul in sight. I guess moms in Mundane are up getting the holiday feast prepared, kids are sleeping late. The only thing stirring – even the fallen leaves are still... Sign in to see full entry.

TUESDAY AT THE CIRCUS
I believe there was a slap-happy disturbance in the force yesterday. Or maybe it was just that a couple of crabby-ass regulars were absent: JoAnn of the kitchen crew is prone to griping and gossip, and cranky Bobbie, whose tongue can be a double-edged razor. JoAnn and Bobbie don’t like each other.... Sign in to see full entry.

FROM THE BOOKSHELF
I just finished reading a book by Walter Mosley, “The Man in My Basement.” It may be the strangest novel I’ve ever read. In case you’re not familiar with this author, W. Mosley is the writer of the Easy Rawlins novels about the romantic adventures of a black detective. He’s also written “Devil in a... Sign in to see full entry.

YOUNG LOVE, REDUX
The senior center is full of kids who are just discovering the meaning behind the words of love songs they heard when they were toddlers. At some level, we’re still in 7th Grade. Remember how it was? Going steady meant we walked together from math to history, and sat together at lunch. Those who... Sign in to see full entry.
