OLD TV SHOWS

In the late ‘50s one of my favorite shows on TV was a western, Have Gun, Will Travel. The star of the show was Richard Boone, and according to an article on Google, he was the sixth great grandson of Daniel Boone, the pioneer who explored the frontier and “killed him a bear when he was only three.”... STORIES FROM THE CENTER

I’ve been urging the writers in the WYOS class at the Main Street Center to read one of their stories in a future program. A week or so ago I did a mock-up, a very preliminary rough-cut of a newsletter- style publication, titled “Stories From The Center.” As with many titles, this one has a double... “LADYBUG, LADYBUG

Fly away home. Your house is on fire, your children will burn.” When I was a kid mother sent away to some seed catalog for a batch of ladybugs. It seems she had a problem with aphids munching on her rose bushes, and the ad said ladybugs’ fave food is aphids, those little green dots that could be... Sign in to see full entry.

TOO MUCH LIKE A CLASS…

When I got there The Center was bustling as the staff set up for the Veteran’s Day luncheon. There were more than 60 expected guests: WWII, Korean and Vietnam veterans and their loved ones. The catered lunch was spaghetti, a tossed salad and bread, topped off with home-baked donated Bundt cakes.... Sign in to see full entry.

LOOKING FOR LOVE IN ONE OF THE WRONG PLACES

It was the ‘80s. I was single again, thinking of joining the feminist revolution, “I am woman, hear me roar,” etc… I had kids who spent every other weekend with their dad, was taking two classes a semester, and my job was becoming more a career. There was a conference in Champaign, economic... Sign in to see full entry.

HIGH NOON IN GEEZER GULCH

You know how it is some days you get up “on the wrong side of the bed.” You have a borderline headache, and it lingers even after a shot of coffee. Your stomach feels growly and that keeps going even after a bowl of oatmeal. At 8:45 you put on your winter coat. It’s cold outside. November gloomy.... Sign in to see full entry.

LOOKING FOR A PUNCH LINE

I’ve been trying to keep it light here on Blogit and on Facebook, to look for the silver lining. No easy challenge these days, given the news we get on TV, from the local papers, online. It’s like walking out the front door to find a flock of vultures lined up and waiting to chomp down on your... Sign in to see full entry.

ALMOST JUST DESSERTS…

We were divorced in September of 1981. I told the judge about Fang’s habit of not speaking to anyone for weeks at a time, how he’d fill his plate at the table and go eat by himself in front of the TV. Just fifteen minutes into the hearing, his honor tapped his gavel and said “Divorce granted.” I... Sign in to see full entry.

Ghosts in their time

A few days ago a guy walked past my house just as I came out the front door to check the mailbox. He looked so much like the boys' father I had to catch my breath and stared after him - the walk was the same, the build. I didn't get a look at his face, but the shape of his head, the angle of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Thursday's writing topics:

· Look up what was going on in the world the year you were born, write about how it impacted your parents/family. · Re-imagine a scene from your favorite TV show, or write a brief dialog between two of the characters; i.e., what would Sulu and Ohura say to each other during a coffee break on the...
