The benefits of messes

I feel like I got an extra day this week. This is mainly because I went through most of yesterday, Thursday, thinking it was Friday. So I woke this morning thinking, Saturday... again. And then remembered, no it really is Friday! It's another day of sunshine and relative warmth: 60 F is predicted for this afternoon. After near-0 earlier in the week, this is balmy! I got a bit of video from my daughter of her younger daughter who just turned 1 this month. Visiting with video-calls fairly... Sign in to see full entry.

wait... it's Thursday?

Thought it was Friday until we were on our way back from our shoppings. I got my flu shot while I waited for my prescriptions, then went to the grocery store to restock my freezer which finally became close to empty. In other words, only half full of things I don't really want to use, but it's still food and who knows, someday I might be in the mood for it. Or that desperate. Then a special stop was made at the local Trader Joe's for things that can't be obtained at the regular grocery store.... Sign in to see full entry.

Every month...

I have one prescription that they keep telling me at the pharmacy is in short supply, so they'll only fill it a month at a time. This means I have to make the drive, 10 miles round trip, to the Kaiser pharmacy every month. On the other hand, it serves as a kind of calendar, which is very handy in these days that flow mostly unchanging one after another. That works, at least, if I actually do remember to take the damn pill every day. It's one I don't forget often. It's allopurinol, the one that... Sign in to see full entry.

Blood sugar ups and downs

Oops... I had breakfast around 9 this morning, and coffee a little later. Then, somehow, it was nearly 5pm and I was jittering. Well, that's what happens when blood sugar drops way below 100, the way we measure it in the US. Happily, there was cake... When I check again in an hour or so, it is likely to be rather higher than 84. Below 60 or 70 is where it gets dangerous, but luckily, the jitters start before that and are a signal a diabetic is wise to take note of, and act upon promptly. It's... Sign in to see full entry.

COLD!

At 9 AM, it is 8F out there in the whiteness, with a high expected of 13F today. I see no need at all to open any doors to it, all this day, and accept that there will be no cold water available in the upstairs bathroom for some time, as I forgot to leave it dripping overnight. It will be a good day to catch up laundry, knowing that the dryer will send warmth and some useful moisture into the house. Also good for roasting or baking. I don't bake much, because... carbs! And I only have a small... Sign in to see full entry.

Hello winter!

The air is full of dancing snowflakes, as the temperature falls from a high of 24F on its way down to somewhere just above 0. So lucky here, to sit in a warm house with my warm pets and plenty of food in the fridge. Great day for roasting something in the oven, though I don't know what yet. The snow will continue through tomorrow, they say. Then, through the week, the temps will climb to the mid 60s. After that... yes, it's winter. No more sandals, no more light shirts and short pants. No going... Sign in to see full entry.

Fire and Ice!

It's a cold morning, and the doves showed up to forage on the feeder, then went to huddle up in the nesting corner. Temps in the 20s overnight will be still lower, even single-digits, over the weekend, they say. Poor doves, I want to invite them in, but that's not a thing. Meanwhile, Estes Park is under evacuation orders. You may recall that I used to visit my sister who lived up there until last January when she moved down to a senior community in Boulder. Today her old home is at the edge of... Sign in to see full entry.

Soup for breakfast

I am simmering some tomato basil soup this morning with a few shrimp and the last of the crab that was procured for my grandson's birthday pizza. I tossed in the last 3 inches of little zucchinis, collecting them before tonight's hard freeze (24F expected) and added some fresh basil, too. And half a lemon's juice. Soup makes an easy, quick breakfast, and can be low in carbs and fats as a 'normal' American breakfast is not. Which reminds me of a poem I wrote years ago, sitting in a Denny's...... more sunset photos

It's a quiet autumn day, temps rising to mid 70s. By the weekend, I hear we are to expect snow flurries. Friday I'll be bringing in the herbs again. I've written in my Loosely Speaking blog about this morning. Now all's about hanging out here, having a bit of breakfast, and Embers and me being each other's warm spot in a chilly house. She has been especially attentive since I've been spending, on some days, hours out in the world. Yesterday it was a bit of treasure-hunting at a couple of thrift... Sign in to see full entry.

Sometimes, Tuesday is the first day of the week.

We are done with birthdays for a while... Diets can get back on track, nearly all the projects around the birthdays are accomplished, plans played out. The proof of the menu is in the photos. Last night was disturbed. Just after I turned out the light, suddenly my face felt hot. Not fever hot, but sunburn hot. Then my arms... hot, itchy, just this side of pain. I only know one thing that causes this: an OD on niacin. Somehow, taking all my vitamins and meds before bed, as I often do, brought... Sign in to see full entry.
