Embers reclaiming her space

Last night she roamed the house repeatedly, mewing and meowing and outright hollering as she went. A couple of times she cuddled up with me, quietly, but it didn't last. She visited my friend in the guest room downstairs, too. I hope she settles soon. This morning she also cuddled a while, and then went to her customary spot of morning sunlight to bask while the spot was there. We gave her a hydration IV treatment today, and that went smoothly with minimal fuss. It only took about 5 minutes and... Sign in to see full entry.

Embers is home

She is currently huddling in one of her personal hide-outs, sleeping off a Bad Time. She's doing a little better after the hospital stay, her kidney values, as they call them, are a little better, too, as expected. Here at home we will be giving her hydration IV drips once a day. It's a simple enough procedure, and only takes a few minutes, but it will take one person to cuddle her while the other does the injection. There is no promise it will make a big difference for very long. But as long as... Sign in to see full entry.

Embers report

I called the vet hospital today to see how Embers did overnight. She seems to be doing fine, but turned up her dainty little nose at the canned stuff they tried to feed her. So, this morning I went out to the little pet store I favor, bought a bag of the stuff she is used to, and delivered it to the vet. The tech there let me know she's doing well with the circumstances. I once took a cat in to a vet for an overnight stay, and she died that night. So, I know that can happen. But it isn't a... Sign in to see full entry.

Chat with the vet

If Embers were human, it would be dialysis time. As she is a cat, she will spend the next couple of days in cat hospital getting her kidneys flushed, and when I go to pick her up on Friday they'll teach me how to inject fluids under the skin. This is going to be a daily thing, I think. I've given under-skin shots before, so I'm not too alarmed by the prospect. The flush jump-starts the process, it won't be a regular thing in itself, I'm told. There are no signs of diabetes: this is all kidney... Sign in to see full entry.

Back from the vet

I think it's an indicator how poorly Embers is feeling, that she hardly complained at all the whole drive to the vet. Or maybe it was William Tell Overture playing on the radio. Anyway, the vet discussed some of the possibilities, the worst--advanced kidney disease--is not the most likely. A full blood panel will determine that, and those results should be in tomorrow. It could be a urinary tract infection caused by bacteria, or one not caused by bacteria. In case it's the former, she got a shot... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday... last day of August!

Cool morning, hot afternoon... mountains are vague again. Embers is headed to the vet this afternoon, to check out her urinary problem. She isn't gonna like that. We bought some grass yesterday for Charlie's birthday party on Sunday. Calm down, it's artificial turf. We got a patch of the deep, multi-greens kind to put on the Compass Rose Stage for a new "Garden" set. A few of my deck-orations will fill the sides and corners. Charlie will be opening the stage today to clear out what's inside,... Sign in to see full entry.

Another week begins

After a very cool 55F at dawn, it will be hitting 90 later today, They say. We nearly had rain yesterday--got close enough to hear the thunder rolling by, but none of the downpour we thought we saw coming through the Front Range, headed right this way. But the mountains are clearly visible this morning thanks to the cleansing rain that fell there. There is Pike's Peak, one of the Rocky Mountains' Fourteeners--referring to the big ones near or over 14,000 feet above sea level. Then, just east of... Sign in to see full entry.

a beautiful Sunday

Today's high is forecast to be 80F. Bliss...! Out in the deck garden, the doves young and older, are hanging out in the hanging baskets, perching on the swing chair, sitting on plants... I see one now, hunkered down in the hanging pot of oak ivy. When the deck is bare and comparatively bleak, they have more reason, I guess, to fly off into the world. Yesterday I added another sunset-colored cone flower and a pot of dark yellow, arching fronds of crocosmia, aka montbrecia. They are on the back... Sign in to see full entry.

And the heat is back again today.

Yesterday was cool, lots of clouds and late in the evening, some actual storm came and washed the air clean: This morning the mountains are clear! When I went out on the deck this morning, first thing I noticed was that the dovelings were no longer in the nest. Flown! But, as it turned out, not far. Only to the new basket I've hung up just in case a new nest is wanted. Not that they were in it, just on the edge and the rope it hangs on. Suddenly, one of the Elders arrived, seemed noisily... Too-hot Tuesday whinge

Sitting in the cool now, beside the a/c with the louver angled to blow right on me in the comfy chair. I've had a vague headache since before lunch, probably because lunch was so late! There's a fish'n'chips truck that Charlie and I wanted to go to, it was so good a couple of weeks ago! But he had a restless night, woke at 10am and went back to bed until 2pm! The heat has been getting to me, and going out for a few hours, even with the traveling parts being cool, even cold! But the walking... Sign in to see full entry.
