Saturday of the birds

I heard the dove again last night, and this morning, that mini-jackhammer sound of the Northern Flickers for the first time in several years. Twice, high up, ducks were calling as they flew over. Those flickers, birds of the woodpecker family, used to try each spring to drill a hole in the wall of this place. If they'd succeeded, they'd have been nesting in my closet. I tried various discouragements, but finally it was the suggestion to the landlord that he tack some chicken wire onto the siding... Sign in to see full entry.

Life goes on...

This afternoon we picked up the ashes of Embers, some flowers and a little leyland cypress tree, about 2 feet tall. Charlie prepared one of the big garden tubs, putting drainage holes in the bottom, and some soil. I put the flowers, cut off their stems, in a hollow in the soil, and we put the ashes over them, then more flowers over the top. More soil... then, the little cypress. Now, looking out across the yard, I will see that little tree growing and remember Embers and her glowing eyes. Sign in to see full entry.

crochet continues...

Here are photos of the little humming-bird cozies (Thanks, Pat!) as requested. https://flic.kr/ps/rhS1C They are a good size to hold a couple of Lindor truffles each, or a mini candy bar. Some are big enough to hold something like a jewelry box. Today I am making some littler ones to each group, too. At least one is long and thin, to hold some candy canes perhaps. I am aiming for a dozen total of various sizes, in each batch. Sign in to see full entry.

Sort of busy Wednesday

Continuing to feed the illusion that I actually do a lot of work, today I am writing about cleaning up--again!--after the nocturnal visits of the mousies. The kitchen, and therefore the house and my hands and all smell of clorox. I've ordered one of those hinged devices that sits on top of a 5 gallon bucket and lures the mice in with tasty aromas, then dumps them in the bucket. I have little heart for slaying them, even with snap traps that usually but don't always kill quickly and cleanly. If... Sign in to see full entry.

another quiet Monday

Here it is evening. One clock says it's almost 9, the other says it's just about 8. I have been up since 5 this morning... or was it 6? It has been a quiet day, mostly spent online, with a few breaks from my game to shift plants and clean things. There are now more plants in the bathtub, and some of the dining room table has emerged from under the transported deck garden. Much of the aquarium gear has been boxed and moved to the garage. Tomorrow we'll be running around town some, food-shopping,... Sign in to see full entry.

Letting go

Thanks to you all who have left messages on the previous post. I so much appreciate that Embers was not just my cat, she was our cat, all the people I shared her with here and in person. It has been a weekend of ups and downs, of calm and purpose and tears, as I let go of Embers and her presence in this place. There is some cleanup to do where her catbox sat in the bathtub, and the box will be washed and put away. All the medications that were only a little used, those will be boxed up to be... Sad...

We said goodbye to Embers today. I knew when I adopted her 6 years ago, aged 15, that this time would come. When she developed kidney disease, aged 21, I know it was only a matter of months, maybe a year. But she went downhill pretty quickly, six months from the first diagnosis. Her kidney function numbers were so bad, she was not eating, and she was down another pound and a half from her last vet weigh-in, just barely 6 lbs. Doc said if she were human, she'd be on 24/7 dialisis. At best, we... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday

Here it is, almost bedtime after a busy Tuesday. We dropped our ballots in the box yesterday evening, and I am content to wait for results to roll in through the week. I've pretty much recovered from the weekend, enough to do a shopping trip to the thrift store for the senior discount day. That resulted in the acquisition of a couple of shelf units for the desk which has reappeared this past week, and that meant some further cleaning up, tossing out, re-organizing... I am finally learning to... Sign in to see full entry.

Weekend at Denver FanExpo

The convention formerly known as Denver Comicon was where we were this past weekend. It was immense! I got lost the first time I went strolling around, took quite some time and luck to locate Charlie's booth again. It's by far the biggest we've ever participated in as exhibitors--or at all, I guess! He had a tower of Wasteland Bears--17 of them, of which 11 found homes and new best friends. There were also many of his other creations, new and old. At the very end of the show, Sunday evening, the... Sign in to see full entry.

quick morning note

I'm just about ready to go out the door for the second day of Fan Expo. Costume is bagged up, and makeup kit, and all the stuff I will apply at the site. We are taking our own food as the gougers at the site are not making much food I can eat, and charging ridiculous money for it. No other food is allowed in, but we'll have it in the truck and hotel room. Yes... the venue for once is not a hotel, but we will stay overnight in one a short walk--as if any walk for me, is short! And Vale will be... Sign in to see full entry.
