Well, Embers is eating again, just a bit. She has a couple of meds to aid appetite, maybe they are working. It may have also helped that I took the mortar and pestle and reduced some of her lentil-sized kibble to smaller crumbs. Probably both. Anyway, I am glad to see her face down in the food dish from time to time. But now--she is snuffling and sneezing! So, another thing to speak to the vet about tomorrow. I am still pondering that parcel of land... Have spoken with my son-in-law who has... Sign in to see full entry.

Home from TED
Well, that was fun! I should mention, this was a TED X event: a slate of speakers from 10am to 3:30 pm, organized and presented by Metropolitan State University in Denver. They will edit footage of the event they made, and send it to the TED 'mothership' in NY where it will be assessed and at least portions of it, possibly published. There were talks on many topics, all speaking to the theme of the day: Ready to Rise. Not rising up as in revolution, but personally: rising to your own potential,... Sign in to see full entry.
TED talk today!
We are off early today, driving to Denver to our friend's TED talk! Embers is over by the glass door to the back porch, waiting for the sun to break through some light clouds and a filter of smokey haze. We don't have the Golden Hour here, morning or evening. It is more like the Copper Hour. It will be mid-90s today, They say, then sliding down to 70s and rain next Tuesday. Same day as the vote in California, whether to recall Gov Newsome and replace him with a deeply conservative Republican,... Sign in to see full entry.

Sun going down on Thursday...
The morning was cool, and I closed the bedroom door to the deck early, to hold in the coolth. It is 90 outside, but a little lower in there. When the temps outside are lower, the door will open again, and the fan will blow that air into the bedroom, and bring it to a proper sleeping level. I remember miserable nights when I was a kid, with tropical heat and humidity, and lying awake for hours. Today Charlie and I drove out to look at a piece of land, almost 5 acres, with trees and pasture, that... Sign in to see full entry.

Midweek Updates
Well, the doves are back... one, anyway, cooing seductively into the air! Embers is doing better in some respects, kidneys seem to be working again. Today I go to the vet to pick up an appetite stimulant as she is not eating. It's an easy one, an ointment or cream that is to be rubbed into the skin of her ear. Sounds relatively easy, that one! Charlie's party was a great success, though we should probably have started later than 1, maybe 3 or 4. Not many stayed to the Cake Time, so there was a... Sign in to see full entry.

Labor Day Monday
Chilly, sunny morning here--Temps dipped into the 40s overnight! And yet, today it will, They say, get to the 90s. Embers is feeling much better today, I am glad to report. Overnight, she only went on a yowl-prowl once, and several times sought cuddles, with her quiet purrs. Today we'll do the IV fluids again, and attempt a medication that is to rubbed onto her gums. That, she will not much like! Charlie's One Yard Old birthday party went very well, with the Open Stage. There was live music and... Sign in to see full entry.

Embers reclaiming her space
Last night she roamed the house repeatedly, mewing and meowing and outright hollering as she went. A couple of times she cuddled up with me, quietly, but it didn't last. She visited my friend in the guest room downstairs, too. I hope she settles soon. This morning she also cuddled a while, and then went to her customary spot of morning sunlight to bask while the spot was there. We gave her a hydration IV treatment today, and that went smoothly with minimal fuss. It only took about 5 minutes and... Sign in to see full entry.

Embers is home
She is currently huddling in one of her personal hide-outs, sleeping off a Bad Time. She's doing a little better after the hospital stay, her kidney values, as they call them, are a little better, too, as expected. Here at home we will be giving her hydration IV drips once a day. It's a simple enough procedure, and only takes a few minutes, but it will take one person to cuddle her while the other does the injection. There is no promise it will make a big difference for very long. But as long as... Sign in to see full entry.

Embers report
I called the vet hospital today to see how Embers did overnight. She seems to be doing fine, but turned up her dainty little nose at the canned stuff they tried to feed her. So, this morning I went out to the little pet store I favor, bought a bag of the stuff she is used to, and delivered it to the vet. The tech there let me know she's doing well with the circumstances. I once took a cat in to a vet for an overnight stay, and she died that night. So, I know that can happen. But it isn't a... Sign in to see full entry.

Chat with the vet
If Embers were human, it would be dialysis time. As she is a cat, she will spend the next couple of days in cat hospital getting her kidneys flushed, and when I go to pick her up on Friday they'll teach me how to inject fluids under the skin. This is going to be a daily thing, I think. I've given under-skin shots before, so I'm not too alarmed by the prospect. The flush jump-starts the process, it won't be a regular thing in itself, I'm told. There are no signs of diabetes: this is all kidney... Sign in to see full entry.
