The Mountain, Again

Since moving in here, and enjoying the dawn light on Pike's Peak, I have come to appreciate that this is not an every day occurance. Some days, there is weather in the way: rain or snow. Sometimes, cloud makes it seem there is no mountain there at all. And I've begun to sleep later in the morning, missing the days where all is clear and the mountain glows so beautifully bright white by the time I see it. But last night, I was in bed at 9, and here I am, awake at 6AM, and the air is clear... and... Sign in to see full entry.

The Tempest

Since writing the previous, I've watched Christopher Plummer as Prospero in the 2010 Stratford Shakespeare Festival's THE TEMPEST. Marvelous! The set, the costuming, the acting... all marvelous! The costuming and makeup for the magical sorts--Ariel, Caliban and some others--is just wonderfully imagined and executed. I found it on Netflix. And now I will have to go see A TEMPESTUOUS NOISE again, with more understanding of the story it's derived from. Sign in to see full entry.

A Tempestuous Noise

That's the name of the latest production that Charlie's in. It is a 'devised' performance, which is to say, it is an interpretation of a plot, a theme, a story, that is very loosely based on the original piece. For instance, this one is based on Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST. It uses almost none of the dialogue, and instead, makes great use of body language that is not quite actually dance, and many sound effects and musical instruments to create atmosphere and mood. Charlie is Prospero, and the... Sign in to see full entry.

What, again...?

Snow... about 4 inches now, and still coming down with enthusiasm. I read that April is this area's heaviest snow month, short of March. Well, it's pretty, at any rate, and I am indoors, and warm. And Colorado needs the wet! I am reminded of my sister-in-law who, when she was prepping for her first day of kindergarten was all full of glee and excitement, she went to school that morning with much fanfare, not a tear at all, and came back enthusiastic and full of tales. Everyone was very pleased.... Sign in to see full entry.

...and finally, the latest shots of the house

Here are the shots of how the house looks in its most recent arrangements... http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Dinner is first, or last, depending how you look at it. Sign in to see full entry.

After the party...

The housewarming open-house went smoothly, with a light parade of friends (mostly folks I know through Charlie, including our landlord and lady, some theater students and a prof, but also the ladies who run a local coffee oasis). Some will be closer friends hereafter. In the morning hours, Charlie made crepes, which he does exceptionally well, and I laid out the sweet and the savory fillings. My favorite was a blend of both: the grated-apple sauce with bits of breakfast sausage in, rolled up and... Sign in to see full entry.

"I've Grown Accustomed to My Space..."

As I live here day after day, sorting my selected stuff, using the kitchen, forming the habits of living here, I notice something interesting: Every day, familiarity grows. I don't open the wrong drawer in the kitchen for a thing. When I need an outlet, I can go straight to it, instead of hunting. Actions become routine instead of novel. It's like my son said about the kitchen: It was like a new kitchen--now it's a kitchen. But it applies now to the living room, and the bedroom, not just the... Sign in to see full entry.

projects proceeding...

The workroom has begun to emerge from under boxes and stuff... I cleaned and set up three card-tables today, to begin the actual organization of stuff. Sewing machine in one corner... photo frames and prints and the cutter for trimming edges, in another. There will, naturally, be a yarn corner, though the room is running low on useable corners. I planted the scarlet runner beans today, and two pots with sweetpeas. I watered them, and waited... It has been over an hour, and they have not sprouted... Sign in to see full entry.

A room full of straw to be spun into gold...

A room full of boxes to be opened, contents distributed throughout the house... spun into home. Some things I am delighted to create new places for. There's a very nice collection of history books, including the 11 volumes of Ariel and Will Durant's THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION, got a few years ago at a thrift shop. There is one of the best books about Elizabeth I, by Elizabeth Jenkins ELIZABETH THE GREAT. Next to it, LETTERS OF THE QUEENS OF ENGLAND 1100-1547, and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HENRY THE...
